The Art Deco Skyscraper Thread
I had a look through (granted only a few) pages of the Architecture forum and didn't see an art deco related forum i even looked in classic architecture.
So i decided that i needed to create an art deco thread all about your favourite art deco highrises, skyscrapers and supertalls. Just post your favourites and it's always nice to see pictures ![]() so my favourite 5 have to be: Empire State Building, New York City NY: 381m/1250ft, 102 floors ![]() http://www.grands-inone.com/wp-conte..._building1.jpg The Chrysler Building, New York City NY: 318.92m/1046ft, 77 floors ![]() http://www.earthdocumentary.com/new-...uilding-01.jpg Buffalo City Hall, Buffalo NY: 115m/377ft, 32 floors ![]() http://briggsyengineering.com/wp-con...9/cityhall.jpg Mather Tower, Chicago IL: 158.8m/521ft, 41 floors ![]() http://www.american-architecture.inf...r(2)_small.jpg Fisher Building, Detroit MI: 135.47m/444ft, 30 floors ![]() http://www.detroit-travel-guide.com/...r-building.jpg

What about the Guardian Building, Detroit MI ?
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=guar...ng+detroit&z=e Detroit could easily be ranked the Art Deco skyscraper capital of the US, check out this link : http://www.buildingsofdetroit.com/places

The Art Déco-skyscraper capital of the world is probably Havana, they have quite a lot of them along the Malecón.
Unfortunately, I don't have any good pics atm. But don't mind posting more pics. I like the style quite a lot.

![]() The AiQun hotel in Guangzhou. It was hard to find a decent pic, as it is located in a constricted area. It is located on a triangular lot and looks imposing in person. http://images.travelpod.com/users/ri...0.xxxx_001.jpg ![]() The Marine Building in Vancouver. Featured in countless B-movies, including 'Timecop' with the immortal Jean Claude Van Damme. http://www.intermarklaw.com/Portals/...nebuilding.jpg image hosted on flickr ![]() The Wiltern Theater/Pellissier Building on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. ![]() The Eastern Columbia Building on Broadway in Los Angeles. http://www.you-are-here.com/broadway...n_columbia.jpg ![]() The American Radiator Building in New York. Art Deco with Gothic detailing. http://www.myfourthirds.com/files/11...353gRGBORF.jpg ![]() The JP Morgan Chase Building in downtown Houston, formerly the Gulf Building. http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/H...Jan08-002a.jpg There are way too many art deco buildings to list. I remember these buildings because they are located in cities in which I have spent significant amounts of time. Last edited by particlez; November 24th, 2010 at 05:57 AM. |

A stark reminder of financial crisis anmd how it affects buildings, this was the original plans for the Metropolitan Life Insurance North Building:
![]() http://nyc-architecture.com/wp-conte.../GRP19-502.jpg It was a proposed 100 storey art deco skyscraper that would have dominated the NY skyline but due to the great depression construction stopped on the 30th floor, here it is today: ![]() http://www.nyc-architecture.com/GRP/grp-MetLife.jpg Could you imagine what this tower would have been like in rela life?
