District of Andamans is Northern Part of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and comprises of 550 Islands, Islets and rocks out which only 26 are inhabited. Some of these islands are large such as Middle Andaman, North Andaman, South Andaman, Baratang and Little Andaman islands. The Total Area of Andamans District is 6,408 Sq.Kms. The highest point of the territory is also situated in this District at Diglipur. There are four primitive tribes in Andamans District and they have been recognised as belonging to the Negrito stock, namely Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas and Sentinelese.

HDFC Bank Opens Branch in Port Blair

The branch was inaugurated by Chief Staff Officer of the Andaman & Nicobar Command, Commodore Sandeep Pradhan, the Head of Logistics, Administration & Personnel.

HDFC Bank, the second largest private bank in the country, has now gone beyond the shores of mainland India and made its debut in Andaman Nicobar archipelago with its first branch in Port Blair on September 2. The branch will not only cater to the 4-lakh strong local population and the residents of the 37 inhabited islands, it is also set to benefit tourists thronging the tropical islands from other parts of the country as well as abroad with world-class services and products.

The branch was inaugurated by Chief Staff Officer of the Andaman & Nicobar Command, Commodore Sandeep Pradhan, the Head of Logistics, Administration & Personnel.

Port Blair, the capital of the archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, is the gateway to some of the most beautiful virgin beaches and underwater marine life in the world, thus attracting a steady tourist flow round the year.

The islands are also crucial to the defence forces and it is from here that the Indian Navy keeps an eye on the choppy waters of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. HDFC Bank will strive to provide best in class services to these sectors and give a boost to the local economy. The debut of the branch saw an overwhelming response from the local population.

Andaman & Nicobar to have smart cards

The residents of Andaman & Nicobar will be the first one to receive the first tranche of smart cards called Resident Identity Cards (RIC). The smart card will have a 64 KB microprocessor chip.

All the selected 3,331 coastal villages has been covered in the first phase of the project of these States/UTs. In Andaman & Nicobar Islands, besides the villages, all the towns will also be covered in the first phase itself. The approved cost of the scheme is Rs 216.31 crore.

The cards will be distributed by the union Home Minister P Chidambaram in porthrapur village, Port Blair tomorrow on his official visit to the union territory.

About 2.56 lakh cards will distributed to all persons who have completed 18 years of age in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

It had been decided to create a National Population Register (NPR) in the coastal areas of 9 maritime states-- Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal, and 4 UTs-- Andaman & Nicobar, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Daman & Diu as one of the measures for strengthening the security of the coastline of the country.

The scheme encompasses collection of specific items of information of each individual in the coastal areas and issue Resident Identity (smart) cards (RIC) to all usual residents, who are of age 18 years and above.

The card incorporates several physical security features like Guilloché patterns, hot stamped hologram and micro text. The electronic security features of the card include Key Management System (KMS) involving Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and Symmetric Key Infrastructure (SKI).

The Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will initiate distribution of Resident Identity (smart) cards in Tamil Nadu on 23rd January, 2012.

A Consortium of Central Public Sector Undertakings comprising of Bharat Electronics (BEL), Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL) and Indian Telephone Industries (ITIL) was awarded the work of direct data collection, capture of photograph and ten fingerprints. Enumerators were assisted by data entry operators, provided by the CPSUs.

The production and personalization of the RIC cards have been undertaken through the CPSUs. They have setup state-of-the-art production and personalization facilities at secure premises for the coastal NPR project. The delivery of the RICs would be undertaken by India Post for secure delivery to the usual residents.

MPLAD bus pressed into C/Bay service

A 49-seater bus (Ashok Leyland) donated by the Member of Parliament, Mr Bishnu Pada Ray under the MPLAD Scheme to Laxminagar Gram Panchayat, was pressed into service here on Thursday.

The Pramukh, Panchayat Samity, Campbell Bay, Mr Sanjay Kumar Singh flagged off the bus in the presence of Mr. E.S. Rajesh, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Laxminagar and Mr Rajender Pal, Executive Officer, Panchayat Samiti, Campbell Bay, other PRI members and general public.

Expressing gratitude to the MP, the Pradhan, Laxminagar said, “Besides villagers of Laxminagar, the bus service will also benefit the entire population of Great Nicobar particularly school children, women and senior citizens.”

Dena Bank launches maiden branch in isles

The Mumbai based Nationalized bank, DENA Bank launched its 1426th branch at Garacharma and the first in these islands on Monday. The Chairman and Managing Director of the Bank, Smt Nupur Mitra was the chief guest, while Mr. J.K.Singh Kharb, General Manager (Eastern India Operation) and Mr S, J. Majumder, Regional Manager were also present on the occasion.

The Bank will offer a range of services in the Agriculture, Sme, Retail Loan sectors such as Housing, Education Loan etc. The Bank offers loans at very low and attractive rate of interest. Besides, various kinds of deposits and credit schemes will also be on offer for the islanders at the Bank.

Meanwhile, the Bank’s Chairman will also launch at Rural Branch at Bambooflat tomorrow, a release says adding that the banking institution has plans to open another branch at Port Blair soon.

The Transport Department with the objective to facilitate general commuters of North & Middle Andaman District has constructed a Modern Bus Terminus at Rangat with all basic amenities. The said bus terminus will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Lt Governor on 4th February, 2012 at 9.45 AM.
