The 30-sq-km of each major European urban area

CORRECTION: The 900-sq-kilometers of each major European urban area:

The aerial maps I have created for this thread have been created with a mapping/GIS software, not Google Maps or Bing Maps websites, and not Google Earth. Scale is thus assured with better control and each map is projected with the UTM zone that best represents the urban area in question. With these maps, you can be sure you are comparing apples to apples in terms of scale.

To compare the extents of any given urban area, open two web browsers of this thread and compare the same quad (e.g. EAST) of any two urban areas by toggling back and forth, or viewing in dual monitors.

This thread will be most fun for those who have visited several European cities and who have a general understanding of the layout of a given city and its urban area. Construction density can also be determined in the majority of these maps.

I will be slowly adding urban areas, mainly in alphabetical order. So return to find the major European urban area you want to see.

Note:
1. most capital cities will be added. Urban areas of non-capital cities will be added if >= 1 million inhabitants and if imagery coverage is available; I may add < 1 million urban areas later
2. the Centre quad will always contain the city-centre of the urban area's main city, although said city-centre may not always be mapped in the exact center of the quad.
3. the mapping of the urban area in the 9 quads is done in such a way to include the entire main body of the urban area, however, urban development corresponding to arm-like extremities/corridors and even the periphery of the main body may be excluded if they do not allow the city-centre to be mapped within the Centre quad, or if the urban area in question is very extensive, as is the case most notably with London's. As very few urban areas in Europe will occupy more than 30 sq km, this will usually only be a problem for the aforementioned arm-like extremities/corridors but not for peripheral development of the main body itself.

Thank you Larmey and joshsam. I think Brussels and the two "Bu-" capitals of Eastern Europe are next.

I was surprised to see how sprawly Birmingham in England is. It's urban area extends so much for a non-capital city. It's also interesing to see the development styles and patterns between for example Birmingham's UA, which is largely rowhouses (which on the ground level one can see is not purely residential, however), in comparison to Athens, which is very dense in most of its UA and less sprawly. Amsterdam looks very orderly and planned, like nothing was done by coincidence or chance.

which is basically true. Concerning Brigmingham, it's in fact quite difficult to see the difference between the centre and the rest of the city.

You've got a small error. It's not 10 sq.km but 100sq.km a tile. 10kmx 10km= 100km2, so it's 900km2 altogether.

I'm so glad you caught that. I have made the corrections. Unfortunately I can't change the title of the thread

I will see what I can do with Ljubljana. I may have to show smaller capitals with one quad, if their UA's extent is mostly contained in a single quad.

Well the cities that have most of it's population working in Ljubljana (data shows 275.000 living in Ljubljana municipality and 150.000 daily migrations in to the city municipality) extend in this area of 30x30km, so it's no biggie. =) Just imagine that it's a huge metropolis with reaaaaaly low density. =) I do.

Oh! And I sure do hope Ljubljana can make it in this forum. It's far smaller than anything seen thus far, but it is an important capital city of a EU member, so it would be nice for a comparison.
