Finland development news thread

Hi, this is a thread where you can put information related to all sorts of construction projects going on in Finland, whether they are buildings, infrastucture or anything else. There's only one rule: no high-rises, and with high-rises I mean buildinges over 12 stories tall. For them we already have a thread, which isn't going to be killed, despite early reports.

Feel free to add stuff, news, comments, or anything that might come to your mind.

Thanks, I'm just reading for a course exam called "Work and Organizing". Maybe it has its effect one me!

Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant, Olkiluoto

Finland's fifth nuclear reactor will be constructed in Olkiluoto, western Finland, next to two existing nuclear reactors dating back to 1980s. The reactor will be supplied by the French / German consortium Framatome ANP and turbines by Siemens AG. Once operational, total electric output of the new power plant will be approximately 1 600 MW. For comparison, the old reactors generate approximately 830 MW per reactor and one "Chernobyl" type reactor approx. 1 000 MW.

Nuclear waste generated by the three reactors will be buried deep underground in Olkiluoto, near the reactors.

Total cost of the project . . . 3 billion euros.

The Vuosaari Harbour
The descriptions and images are copied from the www.vuosaarensatama.fi.

--------------------------------

The most modern cargo harbour in the Baltic is being built in the Vuosaari
section of Helsinki. Cargo traffic will move there from the West and North
harbours in 2008. The project is being conducted by the Port of Helsinki,
the Finnish Road Administration, the Finnish Maritime Administration and the
Finnish Rail Administration.

Construction plans include convenient land and sea traffic connections for the Vuosaari Harbour. Up-to-date equipment will ensure that harbour operations are efficient. Once the harbour has moved away from the city centre, the West and North Harbour areas will be available for housing and business use. The business park to be built adjacent to the Vuosaari Harbour will create thousands of new jobs.

From north

Thousands of jobs connected with the harbour
The business park rising adjacent to the Vuosaari Harbour is estimated to create 3,500-4,500 new jobs. The area is large enough for 660,000 square meters of floor area for use as new business space. The Vuosaari Harbour will see Finland's largest logistics hub taking shape next to it.

The total cost of the project is about EUR470 million according to the price level in May 2002. This includes EUR260.6 million for the harbour and EUR207.6 million for traffic connections. The Port of Helsinki will finance the harbour itself. It will also cover half the costs of traffic connections, with the Finnish state providing the other half.

The Vuosaari Harbour road connection will be constructed from the harbour to the east end of Ring Road III. To minimize the adverse effects of heavy truck traffic on nature in the Porvarinlahti Natura conservation area, this section of the road will run underground inside a tunnel. The new harbour road leading to Ring Road III will be two lanes wide and roughly three kilometres long. An extension to the Laivanrakentajantie road will serve to connect the harbour road to the rest of Vuosaari.

The stretch of Ring Road III between Itäväylä and Porvoonväylä will be widened to two lanes in anticipation of heavier traffic on Ring Road III and Itäväylä. Part of Itäväylä will be moved further north and a multilevel interchange constructed at the Ring Road III/Satamatie junction. Multilevel interchanges and speed restrictions will improve traffic safety even as transport volumes increase.

Intersection

The 19-km Vuosaari Harbour track joins the main railway line in Kerava's Savio. In Porvarinlahti bay, the line passes over the Natura area along a 200-m bridge. Noise barriers will be constructed on this railway bridge and the bridge will be integrated into the landscape as well as possible.

Huge stuff!

I am a little surprized though that Finland builds a nuclear powerplant, when Sweden is shutting theirs down(iirc).

A bit offtopic: Is Finland part of the nordic energy-exchange? Atleast in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, it's one single market, afaik.

@ Ch1le

Oh, they are safe here. No fear of anything.

@ Northie

I think that nuclear energy is the best solution to meeting our increasing energy demand. It's clean, efficent and there are long-term plans for storing the nuclear waste in a safe location (as shown in the first post).

Yes, we're part of the nordic energy exchange.

Thx for the replies, we'll be concentrating on slightly smaller projects next. Total cost of these two alone is approx. 3.5 billion euros.

Kampin keskus, Helsinki (ie. Kamppi center)

Kamppi square in downtown Helsinki was one of the last open areas in the city, serving as a bus yard. It was decided to relocate all traffic services underground and build residentials, shopping center and a market square in place.

Work on the project commenced in August 2002 and it's now still two years until being finished.

Currently, almost all underground work is done and buildings above are taking shape.

Kamppi as it will look like in 2006

KARTANONKOSKI, VANTAA

See the red dot, cut in half, in the north?

Situated near the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, 15 kilometers to the north of Helsinki downtown, is a relatively new housing area called Kartanonkoski. Its residential buildings have been designed in early 20th century style, and I consider it one of the best looking modern residential areas in the entire country.

New buildings under construction:

Construction of Kartankoski buildings started few years ago and the area is now almost fully finished.

My biggest gripe with the area is the lack of decent public transport connections to the city of Helsinki - only busses.

LUTAKKO, JYVÄSKYLÄ

Here's another large-scale urban development project that is also almost fully developed by now - looks like I was a bit late with this thread! In the town of Jyväskylä, Central Finland, a former industrial area called Lutakko has been transformed into a residential / office area. Somewhat out of the ordinary is the number of mid-rises, because like in Helsinki, high-rises are not always considered very welcome in Finnish cities.

That didn't stop Jyväskylä from zoning the area for several 12 story residentials, one 15 story landmark office tower and a 16 story residential tower (construction hasn't started yet).

Almost the whole area, seen here in rendered form, has now been built. The taller residential tower will be built left of the white 15 story tower, on that empty spot next to the road that goes through the city:

15 story, triangle-shaped Innova office building, built few years ago:

Well, look at the number of views

I personally have not seen this thread since before my vacation. The developements in Lutakko looks huge, and the two landmark towers will fit nice into the area, to sort of tell where the centre of the area will be(?). If only we could get some landmark towers in our projects here, like at Fornebu for example....

""That didn't stop Jyväskylä from zoning the area for several 12 story residentials, one 15 story landmark office tower and a 16 story residential tower (construction hasn't started yet).""

I visited in Siitonen's office last week. And he said that he hasn't heard nothing about tower (16-story res.) for a long time. He also mentioned that the planners are maybe "blocking his out", because they want that the tower will be designed by Jukka Tikkanen, mainly because he is from Jyväskylä. :/

Text from tampere.fi

DEVELOPING A TRAM TRAIN SYSTEM IN THE TAMPERE REGION

A report commissioned by the city of Tampere, 'The utilisation of the heavy rail network in public transportation in the Tampere Region', was completed in January 2003. The working group preparing the report was unanimous in recommending the construction of a train tram system for the Tampere Region.

A train tram system would create a modern and environmentally responsible traffic system, providing a basis for land use and for the balanced development of the city.

The plan for the Tampere train tram system comprises two main train tram lines, both of which have extensions in the western and southern parts of the area. The network would serve the Tampere region, which is home to some 350 000 inhabitants living in five counties. According to the plan, the Tampere train tram system would use existing heavy railroad about 40 kilometers, 2/3 of the total length of the lines.

The train tram line would run in a tunnel under the Tammerkoski rapids in the city centre with two underground stations.

As the train tram line would be placed on the bridge leading to Hervanta suburb

As it would go in downtown area

Fate of Tampere's tram train will be decided after the upcoming city council elections next Sunday

Tampere is Finland's third largest city

Here are some shots of similar systems from elsewhere in Europe

Strasbourg

Birmingham

The city of Turku, which abandoned its tram system in 1972, is also planning on creating a new light rail system to meet its needs.

sunny news. This is so interesting to see that tram is coming back. And the project in Tampere seems to be quite ambitious.

This should have been realized a long time ago...Tampere downtown is really crowded by traffic usually and the legions of busses don´t really help the congestion. I sure hope they find the financing for this project soon, cause it is vital for further development of central Tampere.
Damn, if only this would have been up and running while I lived over there
