KGS voted top golf club in East Malaysia
Posted on March 11, 2011, Friday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=101548

KUCHING: The Sarawak Golf Club (Kelab Golf Sarawak) has been voted the club with the best golf course in East Malaysia by Golf Malaysia Magazine’s Course Poll 2008-2010.

It dethroned the number one course — Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai — from the 2006-2007 poll when it garnered 1,821 votes against the latter’s 1,672 votes in results released in the February 2011 issue of the magazine.

“This is, indeed, a historic achievement for KGS. It’s a recognition of the improvements we have made over the years,” said Patrick Chieng, the club captain since 2003.

He added that this was also the first time KGS has received such an award.

“We were ranked seventh in the last poll and this is a very big improvement for us.”

Chieng, who is also Sarawak Golf Association president, attributed the success to the focus of the management, good feedback from the golfers, good service of its staff and restaurant, and the high standard of maintenance.

A total of 5,723 votes were received to determine the best courses in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. The votes were cast through the magazine’s website, email, Facebook during Golf Malaysia competitions and annual GolfFest events.

In the vote, golfers were asked to state their preferences based on the course’s routing, playability, conditions, cleanliness, maintenance, overall landscapes, facilities, services, and the memorable qualities of their rounds of golf.

Third in the top 10 courses in East Malaysia is Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club which received 1,633 votes, followed by Tawau Hot Spring Golf Club (1,515), Sabah Golf and Country Club (1,411), Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club (1,053), Shan-Shui Golf and Country Club (1,007), Borneo Golf and Country Club (978), Damai Golf and Country Club (844) and Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club (765).

Although Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai was ranked second, it retained the title of Best Golf Resort in Malaysia with 814 votes, ahead of Melaka’s A’Famosa Golf Resort (717) and Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club (712).

Meanwhile, Kota Permai Golf and Country Club polled 1,288 votes to take the accolade of top golf course in Peninsular Malaysia while in second and third spots were Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (1,117) and The Mines Resort and Golf Club (1,087).

Fourth to 10th positions were occupied by Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort, Saujana Golf and Country Club (Bunga Raya), Tropicana Golf and Country Club, Tiara Melaka Golf and Country Club, Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort and A’Famosa Golf Resort.

The next poll will be held for 2011-2012 and the results to be released in early 2013.

RM1b for Teluk Datai project
2010/12/09 By Hamisah Hamid
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/4elang/Article/

LANGKAWI: State investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd, through its investee company, Teluk Datai Resorts Sdn Bhd (TDR), and partners are investing RM1 billion in the Teluk Datai master development plan that will be completed by 2014.

The five-year plan, which will see the expansion and upgrading of TDR's hotel and golf course as well as the construction of new hotels, was launched yesterday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Najib said: "Based on the development plan for Teluk Datai, more jobs will be created for residents.

"This will increase the value of their assets and their quality of life.

Present were former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Khazanah managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar.

Langkawi, with a population of about 99,000, was identified by Dr Mahathir as a tourist destination more than two decades ago.

Najib said the development of Teluk Datai, with its pristine surrounding and beaches, was ideal to boost Langkawi's position as a premier tourist destination.

Under the plan, The Datai Lang-kawi hotel will expand to include 13 one-bedroom pool villas and one two-bedroom pool villa, while The Golf Club, Datai Bay, will be re-developed into an international golf course to host tournaments.

Najib said the construction of the villas was expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012, while the golf course would be completed in the third quarter of the same year.

Also in the plan are a 300-room five-star resort, which will be jointly developed with Shangri-La Hotels, a six-star hotel and villas for sale.

Najib said the plan would boost leisure and tourist attractions at Teluk Datai, located northwest of Langkawi and facing the Andaman Sea, to strengthen the bay's position as an international tourist destination.

TDR plans to develop only a fifth of 598ha at Teluk Datai, while the rest, comprising 100,000-year-old rainforests, will be untouched.

TDR engaged Camco South East Asia Ltd (Camco SEA), in which Khazanah has a 5.3 per cent stake, to conduct a sustainability scoping study for the project.

Camco SEA, a green energy expert listed on the AIM London stock exchange, will also design a long-term strategy on rainforest conservation as well as explore opportunities for tie-ups with local partners to conserve land.

Khazanah, in July, acquired a 70 per cent stake in TDR, which owns The Datai Langkawi, The Golf Club and the 598ha at Teluk Datai.

The remaining 30 per cent is held by its founder, Tan Sri Razali Rahman, and Datuk Hassan Abas, through Archipelago Hotels (East) Sdn Bhd.

At the launch, TDR signed an agreement with Shangri-La Malaysia to set up a joint venture to develop the five-star resort. TDR will hold a 51 per cent stake in the company while Shangri-La Malaysia will hold the balance. Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd will manage the hotel.

Khazanah executive director (investment) Mohd Nadziruddin Mohd Basri said the development would create about 3,000 jobs.

He said the arrival of more tourists would create more jobs and opportunities for residents.

"We are positive about the project. The returns must be attractive for us to attract the private sector."

He said Khazanah was considering funding options for its investment, including equity partnership and bank borrowings.

BJCC to hasten upgrade
By DAVID TAN Photos by K.T. GOH Wednesday June 29, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...2927&sec=North

Lovely green: Work on the first nine holes of the
18-hole BJCC course is now 60% completed.

TAIYO Resort (KL) Bhd is targeting the upgrading works at the Bukit Jambul Country Club (BJCC) golf course to be completed in 2012, a year before the scheduled completion.

Taiyo managing director Datuk Eiro Sakamoto said that the first nine holes of the 18-hole golf course was now 60% completed.

“The other 40% is scheduled for completion by end of the year.

“So far, we have completed replacing the grass at the putting greens with imported TifEagle grass.

“We have also completed the trenches on the fairway, which is topped up with sand to improve the drainage system of the golf course,” he said in an interview.

Sakamoto said the cow grass for the fairway was expected to be replaced with Bermuda grass by end of the year.

“We will start upgrading the second nine holes next year and this will take 12 months to complete,” he added.

Sakamoto said the renovation of the golf course would turn it into a buggy-course.

“The buggies are now restricted on only the buggy track.

“Once the renovation is done for the first nine holes, new buggies will be brought in to service the golfers, bringing them to the fairway,” Sakamoto said.

He also said Taiyo would spend about RM3mil to buy 110 new buggies.

He said renovation work for the clubhouse would start in July.

The renovation, which should be ready by December 2011, will see a restaurant serving Japanese, Chinese, and local cuisine, a terrace coffee-house and new changing rooms.

Sakamoto said the upgrading work for the 18-hole golf course is around RM6mil, while the clubhouse renovation would cost another RM3mil.

Taiyo is also allocating about RM30mil to maintain the golf course and the clubhouse for the next 10 years.

“We understand the importance of the club to attract overseas golfers to Penang and its role in promoting tourism,” he said.

Last November, Taiyo signed an agreement with Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Island Golf Properties Bhd (IGP), a subsidiary of PDC, to undertake the management and operation of BJCC for 20 years.

Under the agreement, Taiyo will complete the upgrading works of the golf course by 2013.

“The name Bukit Jambul Country Club is expected to be changed officially to Penang Golf & Country Club soon,” Sakamoto said.

PDC general manager Datuk Rosli Jaafar said Taiyo should be given time to complete the upgrading works by 2013, according to the agreement.

BJCC liaison committee chairman Datuk Boonler Somchit said following a discussion by the liaison council and the management on May 26 regarding the poor maintenance of the second nine holes of the golf-course, Sakamoto agreed to take immediate action to improve conditions.

“Sakamoto also reassured that the renovation deadline of the first nine holes will be met by December this year,” he said.
