Malaysia Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE)

M’sia aims for top five in ICCA within Asia Pacific
Posted on May 5, 2011, Thursday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=128107

KUALA LUMPUR: The government aims to increase Malaysia’s International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) country ranking within the Asia Pacific to a top five placing by the year 2020.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit said the target was set in view of the country’s priority of increasing its focus on high-yield travellers with a particular interest in the business tourism sector along with increasing its share of overall visitor arrivals.

He said that the government also seeks to grow business tourism arrivals from five per cent to eight per cent of overall tourist arrivals through the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).

“This translates to an increase from 1.2 million in 2009 to 2.9 million visitors by the year 2020, as well as an increase in Kuala Lumpur’s city ranking within the Asia Pacific to top four by 2015 and 2020,” he said at the launch of The Malaysia Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) Journalism Award (MMJA) 2011 and press conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

In terms of economic value, Dawos said that business tourism visitors are estimated to spend at least three times more than an average leisure visitors.

“The international business tourism visitor expenditure for 2010 is estimated to be RM11 billion while the economic impact value of international business tourism visitors for 2010 is estimated to be RM 17.6 billion.” Dawos also pointed out that the average spending per trip for international business event visitors is estimated to be RM 7,418.

“We are looking towards strengthening Malaysia’s business tourism brand and positioning it as a preferred destination through media and communication programmes, the development of case studies and success stories and media briefings for the local and international market,” he said.

Through the MMJA 2011, he believes that the country could raise awareness of the business tourism industry and use facilities available within it to emerge as a competitive MICE destination globally.

The award, which will be held for the first time this year, is an initiative from the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and is jointly supported by the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI).

The award is meant to recognise excellence in business events journalism. Entries are open to all full-time print, online and broadcast journalists.

The reports must be published or aired between Jan 1 and Aug 8 this year. Closing date for entries is on Aug 15 and the winners will be announced in September.

Interested applicants can visit the official website of MMJA at www.mmjaward.com for contest forms and sample entries. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is ready to share its expertise in the development of the palm oil industry with the African countries participating in the Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) 2011.

Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, said if there were countries interested and asked for help, Malaysia was always ready to talk to them.

He said interested countries could work closely with the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), a government agency responsible for the development, promotion and regulation of the industry in Malaysia.

"They can exchange knowledge on the discovery and latest technology related to sustainable development of the palm oil industry, best farming practices, sustainable production, branding and certification," he told Bernama on the sidelines of the 16th Asia Oil and Gas Conference here on Monday, June 6.

Currently, he said, his ministry and agencies involvement were guided by the participation of local companies operating oil palm plantations in Africa such as Congo, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The delegates attending the LID, which will be held in Putrajaya beginning June 18, is also scheduled to visit MPOB in Bangi.

Malaysia currently accounts for 39% of world palm oil production and 44% of world exports.

Last year, Malaysia exported palm oil and palm oil products worth RM4.39 billion, an increase of 40.7% compared with RM3.12 billion in 2009.

Major palm oil products exported included palm oil, palm kernel oil, oleochemicals, finished products and biodiesel.

Malaysia will be hosting the LID for the ninth time this year.

It will be held at Putrajaya International Convention Centre for three days from June 19.

LID is an international dialogue among developing nations, which among others, deliberate on poverty issues.

Malaysia last hosted the LID in Langkawi in 2007. — Bernama

SP Setia wins Penang convention centre deal
By Presenna Nambiar Published: 2011/01/17

SP Setia Bhd (8664), the country's largest developer by sales has won a RM300 million project to build and operate the Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre (sPICE), Bloomberg reported, citing an email statement from the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Last Thursday, Business Times reported that the property developer was the front runner and on the verge of winning the job.

Securing the project should bode well for SP Setia, which posted sales of RM1.74 billion and a net profit of RM251.81 million in the year ended October 31 2010.

The project aims to create a "Penang People's Park" that includes the country's first subterranean sPICE, a 2.83 hectares public park on the rooftop, a refurbished and upgraded Penang International Sports Arena (Pisa), a refurbished and upgraded Aquatic Centre and a four-star hotel with retail outlets and a spacious parking lot.

The project will be developed through a public-private partnership agreement between the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) and developer SP Setia Bhd's unit Eco Meridean Sdn Bhd.

On September 3 2010, SP Setia had bought 2 ordinary shares of RM1.00 each in Eco Meridian Sdn Bhd, resulting in the private company becoming a wholly owned unit of SP Setia.

Financing for the Penang project will see MPPP injecting some RM50 million, through a combination of land and cash, while Eco Meridean will finance the rest.

The proposed sPICE, which initially came with a RM50 million priceline, has been mired in controversy ever since Lim proposed it.

One of the concerns raised was that the project would incur huge expenditure, which could result in the council becoming insolvent.

Lim, however, claimed the council could save some RM25 million from the refurbishment, repairs and upgrading work on Pisa and the Aquatic Centre and that Eco Meridean will pay RM13.5 million for land to build a four-star hotel to complement sPICE.

This means that the net sum of MPPP's investment in the project would be RM11.5 million.

Work on the project is expected to start within three to six months' time and will be completed in three years.

State Gerakan chief questions sPICE project
Monday September 5, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...7216&sec=North

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan wants to know the fate of Penang International Sports Arena’s (PISA) 300 workers when construction on the RM300mil Subterranean Penang Interna-tional Convention and Exhibition Centre (sPICE) starts.

“When the project takes place, the services of tenants in PISA will be stopped which means the workers will be affected,” Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan told reporters during the party’s Bayan Baru division annual general meeting (AGM) at Sunshine Square yesterday.

He said Penangites would like to know the details of the agreement between the state and the developer of sPICE.

“Has the tender been given to the developer? Has an agreement been signed and if so, when was it done?” he asked.

State Gerakan vice-chairman Ong Thean Lye in his speech at the AGM said Barisan Nasional stood a chance of wresting the Pantai Jerejak and Batu Uban state seats from PKR, which is said to be the weakest of the three parties in Pakatan Rakyat.

“PKR is famous in producing ‘katak’ politicians and their ser-vice records are not good,” he said. Also present were Bayan Baru Gerakan division chairman Wong Mun Hoe, Bayan Baru Ba-risan Nasional coordinator David Yim and Bayan Baru MIC division chairman K. Sathiasilan.

Wong in his speech, said the party had been telling the peo- ple of Batu Uban, Pantai Jerejak and Batu Maung that they had learnt their lesson and that they were now appealing for another chance.

SACC to launch ultimate MICE experience
Published: 2011/05/09
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html

The Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC), a property of the Selangor State Development Corporation (SDC), has launched a new concept aimed at being the trendsetter in creating the ultimate Meetings, Incentives, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) experience.

The convention centre serves as an ideal platform for town hall meetings, annual general meetings, launch sessions, graduation and signing ceremonies, seminars and lectures.

Its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad told Bernama that the SACC aims to become a venue to serve all segments of the market, such as lifestyle, leisure and business for the young, adults and seniors.

In line with the new concept, the SACC has launched a facelift of its Westside Bistro, which offers a new menu, monthly promotions and targeted activities such as live music performances, a place to hang out for the Bikers Club, Teh Tarik King Show and Magic show from time to time.

Weddings at the SACC will now craft a niche service which will be highly appreciated by couples. For non-Muslim couples, they can now enjoy a package of a banquet reception combined with a civil registration of their marriage by the National Registration Department(JPN).

The SACC is also able to introduce glamorous and outdoor wedding concepts. Couples can now impress their guests with either a wedding in the air, on the water or road experience, with the usage of a helicopter, prestigious antique cars, roaring superbikes or a romantic lake cruise at the Tasik Shah Alam which is near to the convention centre.

Moving on to the MICE facilities, SACC offers a total of nine function rooms of various sizes with two ballrooms, and one plenary hall occupying three levels of the convention space.

The convention centre is also now the home of popular cartoon characters, Upin & Ipin, with an offer of an exclusive thematic party package for children, with the collaboration of Les Copaque.

The SACC has also dedicated retail space for Upin & Ipin merchandise.

In conjunction with the launch of its new concept, a list of exciting events such as the Selangor Lifestyle & Property Expo (SELPEX 2011) and an Open House Hari Raya Campaign, have been lined up for this year.

Recently, the convention centre hosted the Secretaries Week, "Divas Las Vegas", with famous singer Anita Sarawak and Noryn Aziz.

"It is our latest offering as the SACC continually explores opportunities to reinvent our products, meet market demand and synchronise client needs with its signature offerings.

"These include quality service, flexible space and world-class cuisine presented by a professional team in line with our tagline,"Bring the World to Shah Alam & Shah Alam to the World," Zulkifli said after the launch of the convention centre''s new concept here, recently.
