The Royal Dedinje Compound | Belgrade, Serbia
The Royal Dedinje Compound, built on the estate of King Alexander I Karadjordjević in 1924–1936, was intended as the royal family’s private residence. Prominently positioned on the forested Topčider-facing slope of Dedinje hill, it blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. The complex consists of a set of successively constructed buildings: Straw House, King’s Palace with Palace Kitchens, St Andrew’s Chapel, Palace Household building, Palace Guard building, Palace Gendarmerie building, and the White Palace with kitchens and garages, as well as the Palace Park with a bandstand and a swimming pool. Most of the complex was designed by Živojin Nikolić as chief architect, while the White Palace was a competition-winning design of the architect Aleksandar Djordjević. Some of the most prominent figures and studios of contemporary art, architecture, interior design and crafts took part in the construction and decoration of the complex, to mention but the architects Viktor Lukomski, Sergej Smirnov and Nikola Krasnov. Rich art collections lend particular importance to the interior, especially the collection of European and Yugoslav painting, the collection of Yugoslav sculpture, the tapestry and carpet collection, the silver, glass and porcelain collection, the furniture collection, as well as a library. Being the only royal residence preserved in its original form in Serbia and a testimony to a stage in the history of modern Serbia’s statehood, The Royal Dedinje Compound has particular cultural and historical value. It derives its natural and horticultural value from its sitting and a harmonious relationship between the architecture and the natural setting, as well as from its large, beautifully landscaped park. It is expressive of the prevailing aesthetic, social and stylistic standards in the architecture of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. As a complex that keeps a remarkably rich collection of fine and decorative arts, it has high artistic, artisanal and aesthetic value. As a residence and a venue for state, ceremonial and official occasions, which has hosted many prominent persons and statesmen, the complex also has significance associated with events and persons important to national and world history.

Beli dvor is a mansion located in Belgrade, Serbia. The mansion is part of the Royal Compound, a real estate of royal residences and parklands located in Dedinje, an exclusive area of Belgrade.
The Royal Dedinje Compound covers an area of over 100 hectares, of which 27 hectares surround the Royal Palace and another 12 hectares the Beli dvor. The service buildings include kitchens, garages, Palace Guard buildings, the administration of the Office of the Marshal of the Royal Court, etc. Designed by architect Aleksandar Đorđević, Beli dvor is a severe neo-Palladian structure that was inspired by 18th century English houses such as Ditchley Park. Its interiors were decorated with English Georgian and 19th century Russian antiques by the French design firm Jansen, which later decorated the White House during the administration of John F. Kennedy. While the Old Palace (Royal Palace) was being built, King Aleksandar of Yugoslavia wanted to build a house for his children. ![]() ![]() The qualified tour guides at the Palace will tell any visitor that Beli dvor's notable works of art include paintings by Eugène Fromentin, Simon Vouet, two paintings by Nicolas Poussin, Sebastien Bourdon, Madonna dream by Albrecht Altdorfer, Man with flaute by Rembrandt, St. John and Donor and The Holy Family with St. Catherine by Palma Vecchio , Paolo Veronese, two paintings by Antonio Canaletto, Breughel, Eugène Fromentin, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux , Biagio d'Antonio, Giuseppe Crespi, Nicolae Grigorescu , Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Đura Jakšić, Steva Todorović, Ivan Meštrović, Vlaho Bukovac and others. This collection was created by Prince Paul of Yugoslavia. Also the green and white Sevres porcelain service was purchased by him in 1932 in Paris from the gallery Charpentier. The service once belonged to the Comte d'Artois. ![]() ![]()
