SULTAN HASANUDDIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport is located 17 km northeast of Makassar and operated by PT. Angkasa Pura I. The new terminal was opened on 20 August 2008. This airport is the main gateway for flights to the eastern part of Indonesia, and named after Sultan Hasanuddin, a Sultan of Gowa, who fought against the Dutch East India Company in the 1660s.

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport is located on the border of Makassar, and Maros, a suburb in South Sulawesi, approximately 15 minutes (17 km) from Makassar city via Toll way or 25 minutes (23 km) via regular road.

This terminal not longer used for commercial flights because overcapacity. Since the new terminal opened on 20 august 2008, all operational commercial flights moved from old terminal to new terminal. Then, this terminal is used by the TNI-AU (Indonesian Air Force) which houses Skadron Udara 11 (Air Squadron 11).

Located in southern side of old terminal new terminal connected by Raya Bandara 1 Road. This terminal used new concept eco-airport and adopted traditional house style of South Sulawesi. With capacity 7 million passengers, this terminal is five times larger than the old terminal. Has area 51 thousands meters square for terminal building and 78 thousand meters square for apron, also six jetbridges installed in new terminal. Apron of terminal can accommodate most types of aircraft from small aircraft to Boeing 747s. This new terminal also has 60 shop stands in the shopping area, free hotspot in waiting room, and 350 trolleys.[1]

I hope UPG can be developed even further to become one of the main domestic and international hubs for Garuda Indonesia.

Hopefully more international routes will be open in the next couple of years to boost the tourism sector in Makassar and its vicinities.

Antara News reported that Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport's runway will be extended from 3,100 meters to 3,500 meters to accommodate wide-body planes. Construction for the runway expansion will start in 2012.

This fund, according to Syahrul, will be used for the construction of railroads, as well as the construction of bus rapid transport. The corridors being prepared are those for Makassar and Mamminasata, as well as the construction of the monorail (elevated train) from the city centre to the Sultan Hasanuddin Airport. "I have met with a variety of consortia, to seek for a position."

Hopefully this Airport train project will face no delays, like the ones in Jakarta. It's good to know that the local government in Makassar already thinking ahead and long term wise
