Purple Line

The Purple is a go! FTA approved it. The engineering phase is to start immediately. We may see the first stations open in the 2020 timeframe.

This article says 2020.

I wish they would have put that money towards extending the green line to Ft Meade area. $2 billion (which surely will inflate) seems like a waste for what you'll actually end up with.

VA may be anti mass transit but they do have the new Hampton Roads Transit TIDE line in Norfolk. I rode it last time I was down there and it was really nice. Too bad they didn't have the initiative to extend it all the way to Virginia Beach, but the part through DT Norfolk is a good start. So mass transit IS possible in VA.

Maryland isn't too much better, I lived in Bowie MD for 18 years and almost always had to get a ride back from New Carrolton because of the limited schedule of the Metro bus lines in Bowie. It took me an hour to get to College Park and 2 hours to get to Beltsville when I worked for USDA one summer.

O'Malley announces $69 million in Purple Line spending

Looks like people are starting to commit real money to the project. That's a good sign.

Quote:
Maryland has budgeted nearly $69 million in state transportation funds to cover engineering costs for the Purple Line from Bethesda to New Carrollton over the next two years, Gov. Martin O'Malley said Thursday.

The announcement marks the state's first commitment in budget dollars to completing the Purple Line, a proposed 16-mile light-rail line connecting Montgomery and Prince George's counties, which officials now estimate will cost $1.925 billion. It is scheduled to open in 2020.

It is good news...but it's still 8 years away from being completed. That's a long time away and anything can happen before then, and probably will. This is MD after all.
