Visiting Chicago on St. Patrick's Day!

Hello everyone, I am heading to your fine city with a group of friends and our significant others from March 15 to the 18.
I am really interested in what you may suggest doing while I am visiting.
I love pubs, and I love history.
Are there good museums I can check out while I'm there, and are there good pubs to go to on St. Patrick's Day that may not be the mainstream packed places?

I know most places will be packed, but please let me know what I can do while I am there. I have never been!

Thanks!

For Irish Pubs, must try to make a visit to The Abbey. It may be a bit out of the way for the regular Chicago visitor, but I think it would be worth the trip.

For a nice listing on Chicago's Northside:

As for museums, Chicago has many wonderful ones. At the very least, you should go to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum of Natural History.

In and around the University of Chicago Campus on the Southside, you should go to The Oriental Institute (Egyptian/Near Eastern Antiquities) and the Museum of Science and Industry.

On the Magnificent Mile (Water Tower), you can try the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Loyola University Museum of Art.

Thank you for the thorough reply.
Awesome map too!

The field museum of natural history sounds right up my alley. I'll be sure to check it out along with whatever else I can cram in my short visit!

My family ends up at Poag Mahone's and Alcocks near Van Buren/Wells. Both get pretty busy, but each year they get the same group of 8-10 bagpipers and drummers in the afternoon.

And by all means, besides checking out the great local neighborhood Irish bars, take in the downtown parade (noon) and the dyeing of the river (10:45am) on Saturday (17th)!

^Guinness!

Chicago is very proud of its ethnic heritages (plural), loves to celebrate them to the max, often in unique ways, and, among many other groups, the city was heavily settled by immigrant Irish.

OTOH, the Southside Irish Parade was ended a couple of years ago after its popularity overwealmed the neighborhood that it passed though.

The southside Irish parade is back on, maybe.

Loved the city. Going back in the summer!

Only thing I wonder is why it is 1 hour behind where I live...
I always saw Central time is the border between Manitoba/Ontario and down in a straight line... Chicago is MUCH farther East!

I liked it though, one hour more to party!
