Cochin Carnival 2012

The Cochin Carnival 2012 is one of the biggest Carnivals held in Fort Kochi as part of New Year Celebrations. Introduced by Portuguese in January 1st 1528, as part of welcoming Portuguese New Year, the traditions went on till 18th century when the City was taken over British and revived in early 80s.

Its the culmination day of one month long Cochin Carnival Festival comprising of several events. The carnival will feature the cultural melting pot of Fort Kochi's traditions with Portuguese, Dutch, Gujaratis, Konkanis, Malayalees, Andhras, Kannada, Tamil, Arabs, Punjabis and Anglo-Indians.

Could you explain what is the meaning for these progressions? I guess there are inherent meanings for some or all of the pictures

There is no specific meaning or rules for the Carnival. In Portuguese tradition, they believed the first day of a new year must be welcomed by donning fancy-out-of-the world robes. Since Portuguese ladies are barred from participating fancy dress rides in those times, men used to wear in lady robes and appear in fancy robes.

The same concept is used in modern Carnival. Men don in fancy robes, either religious themes or something related to movies, totally fancy and make a procession. A procession is meant to amuse watchers and entertain them on the first day of a new year. Thats all!!!
