Tokyo and region rail maps
Hi all, I'm looking for a link to a PDF map of Tokyo's rail network, basically, the whole region with both Tokyo metro/subway and the commuter lines that surround Tokyo. (Basically, the whole Kanto + Tokyo for JR-East & subway)
The problem I am having is of course my lack of Japanese. I am looking not for an English map, but one in Japanese. Does anyone know any links there that could be shared for me? Cheers

http://www.chiri.com/railwaymap.htm (first PDF link is Greater Tōkyō)
http://www.oricom.co.jp/special/tran...f/rosen_01.pdf http://www.jreast.co.jp/map/pdf/map_tokyo.pdf (this is JR East lines only) https://docs.google.com/uc?export=do...FhYzlmNTI4MzFm (my map) Alternatively, some image-format maps: http://www.jreast.co.jp/suica/area/tokyo/map.html (Suica coverage area map... This is roughly equivalent to the Greater Tōkyō area rail network, with some lines missing) http://www.meik.jp/2rosenzu/tokyo_rosenzu.html http://www.flickr.com/photos/kzaral/...57615721350412 (by SSC user FML)

Nice thread.
I've a question for super Quashlo! I want to learn to make maps like yours with Adobe Illustrator but I don't know how to make dashed lines and the parallel lines like in the example, it's very difficult ![]() ![]() Thanks!

Hello quashlo, thanks for the links, it is greatly appreciated.
The first, from Chiri, could certainly be an option for my needs. I like the 2nd one better from Oricom, the only issue is that the actual Metro is without stations. The Meik one is brilliant, though I don't think it could scale up very well. As for your own fantastic map, it is brilliant! I would also like to know how you done as Sr.Horn asked.

For parallel lines, you use Object > Path > Offset Path, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzJ6Nq54cAM
For the JR-style dashing, it's really just two lines. The one behind is a solid color with bigger width while the one on top is a white dashed line with smaller width. I'm not really an Illustrator power user, so I'm sure there's probably a more creative way, but that's how I do it. The extensions / proposed lines in the map are done in a similar way.

Looking at your map, quite interesting despite my not knowing all of the kanji!
I've been looking for a huge, geographic rail map. Do you happen to know of something similar with English or at least hiragana? I wonder though- why does the chuo line turn super big and yellow a few stations after Hachioji? And this dotted line which sweeps through Yamanashi....I guess that is the Chuo Shinkansen? Where did you get information about this route? Or are you just guessing? As I'm really curious about exactly where its planning to run. |

I also keep an English version:
https://docs.google.com/uc?export=do...FlYWNjZGQxYzA1 I'm not sure about your question regarding the Chūō Line... This is what it's supposed to look like: ![]() Yes, the dotted line is the Chūō Shinkansen... It's not an official alignment. I just needed to put something in the map for it. In reality, the alignment will probably be a lot straighter, but I'm limited by all the stations in suburban Tōkyō... I have to curve the line in several places, else it'll hit one of those stations and people will think it stops there. I did match the fully-extended test track alignment, though.

OK, you're talking about the other direction...
Anyways it should be clearly labeled in the English one... It's the grade-sep of the Chūō Rapid Line between Mitaka and Tachikawa. I experimented with trying to add grade-sep projects to the map. You should be able to see similar highlights on a few other lines in the map, like the Keiō Line, Odakyū Line, and Keikyū Line.

I see, so its the raised tracks bit.
Another question, sorry, but its a good map and its a slow day at work....These dotted lines you have all over the place like for instance metro seven. What is their status? They're actually on the drawing board somewhere or just often mooted plans or what? As I had heard there were no more plans for metros in Tokyo but looks like quite a lot here! |

There's a table / chart on the right side of the map that explains the status of all these lines. The only changes since when I published the map:
- Yumemino Station on the Jōsō Line opened - Should probably move Kamakama Line from "Proposed" to "In Preliminary Planning" - New LRT line for Chūō Ward (Ginza to Harumi) "In Preliminary Planning" I should preface this all by saying "In Preliminary Planning" just means they're doing some sort of feasibility studies, not that it will get built. In the "In Advanced Planning" section, the Sōtetsu‒Tōkyū line is a definite for sure, as are the "Sengakuji Station" (new station on Yamanote Line) and likely the Asakusa Line bypass. The Asakusa Line bypass could also kick-start a Tsukuba Express extension to Tōkyō Station.

Is the Tama Monorail being extended or is it just a proposal?

Just a proposal, from this government document:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%81%...%AC18%E5%8F%B7 The documents recommends breaking ground on the extension north from Kamikitadai to Hakonegasaki before 2015.

Also share my own work...though it might not be a well-done work compared with quashlo's masterful one.

Wow, nice.
![]() Very clean map... Love the interchanges (incl. the way you grouped the station numbers and the use of different linestyles), as well as the treatment of the operators with multiple lines using two colors. The treatment of Narita Express / Skyliner / Romancecar stops and skipped stops is also really creative.

Actually, I just saw the rest of your maps on your website... Fantastic work.
You should post the Tōkyō and Ōsaka ones on the main thread. ![]() http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=828904

Fantastic work, yes ![]() User-friendly, no ![]() How on earth are you supposed to use them, since navigating these massive maps (yours included) is extremely hard and time consuming. I'll take FML's maps any day of the week, can be used on the go when printed on an A2/A3 paper = much better... |

Defining Tokyo region
How would you define "Tokyo Region" on Shinkansen?
Obviously this depends not only on the map of lines and branchpoints, but also on schedules and stopping patterns. From what I gather, the nearest stations which no trains ever pass are Nagoya, Sendai, Niigata and Nagano. Right? |
