CHICAGO Trip (2/22/12) Pictures Part 5: Day 3, Part 2
Hey again, Chicago forumers! Sorry it's been a while, but here's the second part of my 3rd day in your amazing city!
This features pictures of the Shedd Aquarium, and night shots in the Theater District, where I saw the Broadway musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. Without further ado, here we go... Shedd Aquarium, opened in 1930. Once the most visited aquarium in the United States and once the largest in the world, it is the most popular cultural attraction in the city. ![]() ![]() Chicago skyline from the Aquarium... ![]() Like the Field Museum, the details on the inside of the building are impressive... ![]() Caribbean Reef... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() a diver inside feeding the fish... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ocean Tanks... btw, I apologize for not describing the fish, but fish really don't anything to do with cities or skyscrapers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Took in an aquatic show while at the aquarium... ![]() |Trainers with the dolphins... ![]() ![]() ![]() Now with the beluga whales... ![]() ![]() Dolphins doing their show.... ![]() After the aquatic show, encountered a talking sea lion... ![]() ![]() then it decided to take a rest... ![]() Closeup of the beluga whales after the show... ![]() ![]() ![]() Beluga whales underwater... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Penguins, being fed by a trainer... ![]() ![]() ![]() they may not fly, but they swim well... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An otter taking a dive underwater... ![]() ![]() Now it comes above water... ![]() ![]() ![]() "Jellies", a jellyfish exhibit... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Back in the Wild Reef exhibit underground... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Inside this gigantic tank, found a sawfish (aka carpenter shark) ![]() More sharks... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Guide telling us about everything in the tank! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seahorses, surprised how tiny these things are... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bullfrog... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Back outside, looking out at Lake Michigan... ![]() Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears of the National Football League... ![]() Interesting sculpture exhibit near Grant Park, looking towards the Loop... ![]() Supper that night at Morton's, this is the original location of this chain of upscale steakhouses. My fancy meal for the trip, btw, the rest of the pictures were taken with my BlackBerry... ![]() The restaurant is located inside Newberry Place building... ![]() ![]() looking up... ![]() Inside the restaurant, classy... ![]() ![]() Chicago-style Ribeye steak, wine, and bread... all GOOD! ![]() and for dessert, Key Lime Pie... ![]() Gibsons Bar, made famous on the FX comedy "The League". I never knew where this was and happened to just run into it. ![]() Marshall Fields Building, lit up on State Street... ![]() Looking south on Clark Street towards the massive and beautiful Chicago Temple Building, built in 1924 by the firm Holabird & Roche ![]() James R. Thompson Center, a mixed-use complex... ![]() Now in the Theatre District... ![]() Cadillac Palace Theatre, opened in 1926 and design by the Rapp Brothers, George and Cornelius... ![]() Playing was Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, a musical about a World War II romance between an American Nurse and French Plantation Owner... ![]() Ford Oriental Theatre... also built in 1926 by the Rapp brothers... ![]() French Baroque detail inside... ![]() ![]() ![]() Hope you all enjoyed this part of my Chicago trip! I'm a kind of person feeling like living back in the 1950s, one who favors and enjoys the Golden-age, rust-belt cities of Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Detroit, and the Gothic skylines of New York and Philadelphia. In my eye, they have more character, soul, and history to be pictured than today's world-class, cosmopolitan, and sprawling cities. Still can't believe I've never been to Shedd. Great pictures again, this will inspire me to go.
