Mississauga - Canada

Well, here is Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, with a population of over 600,000, is a suburban city in Metro Toronto on the west side. It's pretty much just a typical LARGE SPRAWLSVILLE of a suburban city that is growing at a rapid pace. The skyline of Mississauga is VERY SPREAD OUT, so in some of these shots, you may only see a partial view of Mississauga's entire skyline.





Pretty much what typical suburban Toronto/Brampton/Mississauga/Markham looks like, God awful SPRAWLSVILLES! I haven't seen this kind of sprawl since Kitchener/Waterloo!






Now, I think Mississauga has some of the finest buildings around for its skyline, however, a lot of them are apartment/condo complexes, but some them look very impressive, and architectually neat, and the skyline as I said is spread out, so I am going to give Mississauga a 7.5/10.

Ah yes, that would be Hurontario St, which is basically Brampton and Mississauga's MAIN major north/south road which was also Highway 10 at one time. You can see a Wal-Mart to your right in that picture, and that is part of the infamous Square One Shopping Centre.

Nick, as you get closer to the lake, it is a LOT more older-looking and more of industrial area-like places not only from Mississauga, but Etobicoke as well. Around there was developed first (403 and QEW areas), until it spread up north to the 401 and is a pure 100% suburban feel to the entire place, not to mention to most snotty people and frustrated suburbanites and the finest collection of big box crap per capita I would say of any city in Ontario or even Canada.

Well, one reason I posted Mississauga as a skyline is because in another topic in the Canada section, they were posting rate Canada's top ten city skylines, and a lot of people were debating whether or not to include Mississauga separately from Toronto, although most of the time when they say cities, they mean METRO AREAS/CITIES, which it seems to be, so those guys mainly decided to include Mississauga on their top ten list, and I figured since Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver (I think) is on here, why not Mississauga, and give Metro Toronto's cities a shot at it.

There is NO sense of URBANITY within too many of Metro Toronto's communities, unless you count maybe Oakville, Orangeville, or Newmarket, all three of those cities/towns have an actual historic-like downtown, making it feel like a real city/town, but Orangeville is way over in the Northwest end of Metro Toronto and barely within that area, Newmarket is 40 km North of Downtown Toronto and Oakville. Those are the only three towns/cities that have more urban-like downtown, and feel more like true towns/cities separated from Toronto (but still in the metro area), but their populations are 23,000 (Orangeville), 70,000+ (Newmarket), and 100,000+ Oakville.

For a surburb miss. is pretty dense and getting denser all the time. i was amazed by the amount of condo's when i was there for the second time in august.

I personally don't really like Mississauga's skyline, reminds me too much of STC. However, it's improving a lot, & once it starts to lessen car dependence & liven the streetscape, it will be another bustling city centre in GTA.

wow, looks pretty decent for a suburb... looks like they're at least trying to densify. I've lived in Toronto for quite a few years now and have never even been there.

Toronto is a fantastic city. However, suburb or not, that "skyline" looks crap. It's not a skyline, its a collection of ugly low rise condos, surrounding area is barren and bleak.

The only picture that does it an ounce of justice is the last one with the "big ass road". It looks ok from there. The rest of the pictures are in my mind horrific examples of the area, especially this one:

Sorry I didnt make my last comment clear. The point I was trying to make was that the picture I highlighted does not show a skyline, so why post it? There is no skyline to rate (in general, and that picture was the most extreme case of lack of skyline), if you see what I mean, unless you call 2 story houses a skyline.

And its not just how tall the bulidings are that makes a good skyline, the surroundings also enhance the overall look of the skyline itself. I was pointing out that barren landscapes and big carparks are not pleasent surroundings.

However this is just my opinion, feel free to completely ignore it if it seems unreasonable.

None of the old Toronto suburbs have downtowns or skylines. I'm including North York, Mississauga, Scarborough and Etobicoke. Metro Toronto just has a lot of condominiums spread out all over the metro area and quite a lot of low rise office buildings. There are a few exceptions, but Miss. is not one of them. The Miss. near the lake is very industrial and old looking if I remember correctly. So based on the fact that I really don't see a downtown except around a mall, I gave it a 4/10.

Chatswood in Sydney makes Mississauga look third world.

The only pic thats does any justice is the pic as many mention of Hurontario Steet - the rest is bleak and barren and looks like a horrible place to be. Sydney has several suburban skylines that would rate above it, esp with respect to height and appeal. They should try densifying it a big more and get rid of those rundown pockets of land. I have to say your roads look great though, Canada really does well with freeway and road infrastructure.

I'm just saying that Mississauga is not a great skyline city, but after looking at Burnaby, BC, it beats it hands down. I couldn't even find many highrises in the Burnaby part of Metro Vancouver.

Regarding Chatswood making Mississauga look thirld world, that is insane. We're just saying that it doesn't have a great downtown, but otherwise, metro Toronto is one of the most modern and livable cities in North America. Metro Toronto also does a good job with density.

I personally don't know why you have to live so scrunched up together when you are in the second largest country on the planet, but Canadians seem to like to do it.

First of all, I do realize this is an old post and I do not want to have a debate over it but your comments are just too arrogant for me to ignore.


1. The city of Mississauga is over 20km West of Toronto's CBD and it's a separate city.


2. Chatswood is like midtown Sydney as it's only 10km away from the CBD. On the other hand in Toronto's midtown there're quite a few skyscrapers ranging from 150-250m (correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not very familiar with the heights but I think there're a few 250m ones in construction?).


3. Here's Toronto's Eglinton & Yonge (actually on the border of North York & old Toronto). Courtesy of Google Street View. I might be wrong but I think there're a handful of new projects going up around here, some may be over 150m.





4. North York (northern suburb of Toronto) also has its own city centre, called the North York Centre (abbrev. NYC). It's about 20km North of CBD and hosts the Canadian headquarters of Nestle and Xerox. There're going to be four to five towers which are around 150m (140-160m?) going up at the corner of Yonge and Sheppard and here're some pictures from Google Street View:

IMHO, Chatswood looks more like the North York Centre from the late 90s.

its not like its the only suburb...if you dont like the ways looks, you can always go somewhere else. And lets not forget Toronto along with its suburbs have like 2000 highrises, so there is plenty of seperate skylines to go around.
