Coimbatore is situated in the western part of the state of Tamil Nadu. It has an area of 105.5 sq.km. Along with the nearby town of Tirupur has one of the highest concentrations of textile activity in the world. It caters to nearly half of the country's need of pumps & motors. The basic engineering skills acquired over many decades have logically been extended to other advanced and precision engineering fields like auto components, machine tools, electronics and consumer durables, Industrial automation equipment etc. Many companies in the city have technical, financial, and marketing tie-ups with several reputed global leaders from the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, UK, France, Israel, Canada, Australia etc. The city is now all set to go places in the knowledge based industry. The annual export from this region is over US$ 1 billion. The newly built Codissia Trade Fair Complex, the first ever-private sector initiative, is the second largest permanent complex in the country. The city has many mini townships with independent villas and apartments all providing excellent amenities. State of the art health care facility is available in the city with many super specialty hospitals offering excellent services. The city is well connected by air, rail and road. There are direct flights to and from Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Sharjah. Coimbatore is a pleasant city with a small town atmosphere and is a convenient base for hill stations like Ooty.

Never knew this city was this big. I was just there. Its extremely hot though. I just read Kamal Nath's notes on export growth. Going by what he says, if anything, this city should make its cityzens very rich indeed. Only manufacturing and industrial production will alleviate the poverty of the millions. Services cannot do that. The negative side is manufaturing will bring with it a hefty amount of pollution and waste generation. I saw a BBC documentary where they showed the other side of Chinese industrialization. Bad rivers and water systems. I hope India goes the US way - responsible development - and not the China way - breeding environmental disasters. |

Apart from being a manufacturing and textile hub , covai is getting ready to be one of the IT city of India..
A host of top-rung IT firms, such as Wipro,Cognizant Technology Solutions, Spectramind,Infosys, 24/7 Customer, have already announced their expansion plans in Coimbatore. Already, Tata Consultancy Service, e-Brahma, KG Infotech, Pricol Instruments and other smaller IT firms operate in Coimbatore The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, the nodal agency to coordinate IT investments in the state, is developing 40 acres of land in Coimbatore for setting up an Information Technology Park. The park would have a built up area of 2.50 lakh sq.metres Advantages of Covai: Coimbatore was well connected by air, rail and road. "Coimbatore is one of the few tier-2 cities with an international airport with reasonably good domesticconnections Coimbatore enjoys the advantage of the presence of 19 engineering colleges in and around the city that churn out over 6000 engineers every year. The city also has over 70 arts and science colleges and 14 polytechnics Last edited by Anniyan; April 10th, 2005 at 11:39 PM. |

TN Govt is planning to promote Coimbatore as the second hub after
Chennai for IT and ITES. They dont want chennai to go in the lines of bangalore which rightnow faces a crumbling infrastructure. Coimbatore like Chennai has a lot of well established hospitals. Coimbatore-Tirupur-Erode-Salem belt is famous for textile exports with a lot of small scale industries. Last but not the least Kovai has a wealth of well reputed engg. colleges and a great university. |

GOVENMENT COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY (popularly known as GCT)
About GCT: The Government College of Technology, Coimbatore formerly known as Arthur Hope College of Technology, was started in July 1945 in accordance with the general policy of the then Government of Madras to give high priority to technical education under the post-war reconstruction schemes in order to meet the demand for trained engineers for various industrial and development projects in the State and rest of India. Now it is one of the top Engineering College in the country having a very good infrastructure and facilities. I am a proud GCT alumni.
