San Francisco - USA

San Francisco, California USA

Population: 811,000 (2003)
Metropolitan Area: 7,409,000 (2003)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco

The City and County of San Francisco (population 811,000), is the fourth-largest city in the state
of California, United States, in terms of population. It is a consolidated city-county situated at the
northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula that forms San Francisco Bay. The city-county also includes
the Farallon Islands 27 miles offshore.

The city is the focal point of the San Francisco Bay Area metropolitan area, whose total population is
about 7 million. U.S. census data show that San Francisco has the highest population density of any
city aside from New York City.

The first Europeans to settle in San Francisco were the Spanish, in 1776. The city grew rapidly due to
the California gold rush starting in 1848.

The city was devastated by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but was rebuilt quickly. The phoenix on
the city's flag represents San Francisco's "rebirth" from the ashes of the fire that resulted from the quake.
Long enjoying a bohemian reputation, the city became a counterculture magnet in the second half of the
20th century. It was a center of the dot-com boom at the end of the century.

Widely recognized landmarks include the San Francisco cable car system, the Golden Gate Bridge and the
Transamerica Pyramid.

Everything looks OK... but to me, it seems a little boxy.

I agree that its kinda boxy, the city has the strictest zoning and planning requirements in the nation-its amazing that they even allowed the Pyramid to be built in the first place!

There were 2 1,000-ft. towers proposed in 1999-once it got to the city council-they chopped them down to 4 separate structures and denied all spiral proposals.

Donald Trump has been trying for 15 years to build a 1,000-ft. tower on Market Street.

If San Francisco werent so strict, thered be 3 1,000-footers in the skyline, and thered be 5 more buildings between 700-999 ft.

Sometimes we hate the city council-but theyve protected the waterfront, Golden Gate Park and the public schools have the highest test scores of any big-city in the nation.

the city council maybe is afraid the 1000 footers would ruin the city beauty, cause no doubt san francisco is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in north america

ill give it a 9.0 very generous of me indeed

wow! amazing SF. most US Cities tho have boxy skyscrapers.
but since you said it's about the council zoning restrictions, then so be it.
not so beautiful highrises but they were beautifully clustered.

a friend of mine who knows my interest on skyscrapers just gave me a big poster of skyscraper...and guess wat? it's SF!!! It's a very nice and very clear aerial with the bridge on the background. i dunno if it is already a much used aerial.

btw, i gave it a 9!

Very impressive skyline. 9.5/10. I wished it had more buildings though, prefably taller ones.

San Fran's skyline is a great one by itself, especially with suck a landmark as the TAP, but enhanced by the water of the bay, the hills, and the mountains (larger hills) in the background, it boosts the skyline up to a 9/10.

I know some people would say this is a top 5 american skyline, but I say it's top 10 at best. Still a great skyline, even if I think slightly less of it than some. 9.

I guess I must be the only one that thinks its overly brown and concrete. Its a beautiful city no doubt, situated very nicely, and the TA is a standout, but the skyline itself I don't care for at all. 6.5/10
