What Manc highrises do you want demolished?

There's been a bit of discussion about demolition of buildings like the Ramada and the Jarvis, plus university highrises, in various threads.

So heres a thread purely ad hoc.

Ramada is top of my list, absolutely nothing going for it. Worthless.

Though it's architecturally more valuable than a few other demolition candidates, the Jarvis is so run down and in the wrong place that i'd be happy to see it blown down.

Aytoun Street MMU Tower is probably the worst building in the city!

Truly awful, would consider keeping this if it were radically reclad.

the ramada definately needs to go but the rest of that list are so benign that i dont realy care, infact i think its a good thing to have a variety of styles in the city including rubbish.

the ones on my list would be:

the whole of that godawfull plaza (actualy city tower is looking rather slick already but the podium must go)

the arndale carpark

that carpark in the northern quarter on church street

the "bridge" where the arndale overpasses maket street, i dont know where you'd re loacate the facilites but its rubbish!

and of course that god awfull hotel/appartment tower next to the cathedral, even tho the appartments are quite nice

and there must be a way of making mobile phone transmitters less obtrusive?

that white ex umist block would look so much better without them!

The "toast rack" is a unique structure and must be kept, but that Jarvis Hotel is on par with Concourse House in Liverpool, both well past their "sell by dates", knock it down and soon. The dirty concrete tower next to Manny Way might look presentable if was cleaned.

ARNDALE TOWER - puke coloured shit block of crap

followed by -

1) that Umist carbuncle on London Road
2) Ramada Renaissance Hotel - ugly slab that should have been flattened when Shambles Square went - it looks even uglier now that it has been well and truly upstaged by Ian Simpson's sloping apartment tower opposite.
and
3) that awful 24 storey North Tower with fanlights above the windows that actually stands across the River Irwell in Salford but is now a Premier Lodge hotel (????) having failed to be converted into apartments. Can't remember what it's old 1980s name is but I took some pics of it in 1984 and it looked grey and depressing even then! Thanks CAW for posting up the pic above showing it in all its ugliness

PS - the Owens Park Toast rack building is PROTECTED against demolition now!

Orrr Norrrr Caw. North House looks great! That Aytoun Street MMU tower is pretty rubbish. I'd be happy to see it go. It's hardly a highrise though. And the toastrack isn't much of a highrise either. Are you guys ready for a bit of sacrilege? You ain't gonna like this.

That was it - but I swear it had another - even earlier - name back in the 1970s/80s.

It's hideous isn't it? It's a chav of a building!

That Piccadily Plaza could do with a clean for start, especially the overhang near the bus station, disgusting! - knock it down and build a 300m tower and I wouldn't shed a single tear. All the 4 buildings would have to plead their stay of execution in my eyes.

I have never liked the UMIST Main Building. I like the Town Hall, Central Library, Palace Hotel, Whitworth Street Buildings, the University Main Building/Museum, and lots of other beautiful historic buildings. But the UMIST main building has always comes across to me as some kind of ugly Frankenstein's monster. I'm not saying it should be demolished. But if it disappeared for some reason I really wouldn't mind a bit.

This one is looking up Chorlton Road, Chester Road is the other side of the blocks on the left. And that 'empty church' is now flats, one of which occupies the entire tower over 9 floors - allegedly the tallest single flat in Europe.

Re: What counts as a highrise. Anything over 35m or 12 floors, basically.
