The Museums of Chicago and NYC
Hello everyone. I don't come here much because i stay mostly in the Chicago and Philippine forums, but a recent debate had forced me to defend Chicago musuems' superiority over that of NYC museums. Now i may be biased with my statement, but I am sure that many would at least agree that The Art Insitute of Chicago holds greater prestige over that of all NYC art museums.
Please, share your sentiments. |

Than the Met? Than the MoMa? You have got to be kidding.
Than the Neue Gallery for German Art? Than the Guggenheim? Than the Museum of Natural History? |

lol. When it comes to french impressionism, yes, the AIoC (pronounced "ayok" ) is superior to the NY mesuems. And when you say "prestige" you're implying how the world views it, and I would say that the AIoC is actually underrated, while most of the world considers New York one of the three museum capitals of the world. Btw, are you just talking art museums? |

Well any musuem actually.
Many Chicago musuems are very underrated, in fact all of Chicago is underrated. You can probably say that MoMa is more focused on modernism, but that is the only thing it can boast itself of. In terms of Impressionism and Old American works, the Institute blows any NYC art museum of the water. You can't put your two cents in until you've seen it. Our collection of world renowned art works also is something to boast about. I have to add that the institute collection is not the only to be touted. Its the exhibitions that make a musuem even greater. This summer we have Toulouse Lautrec. Little do any of you know the you're beloved NYT has been printing articles envious of our museum. They feature reviews of everything going on in the Institute. With addition of Renzo Piano's 500 million dollar wing for modern art, we can then effectively challenge MoMa. |

Hmm. Cool! I do definitely think that Chicago's museum buildings are some of the best around. |

I'm not a museum expert, but I definitely found the Field Museum much more impressive than NY's Museum of Natural History |

Depends on what museum I guess. Art museums I'd tend to go with NYC, but Chicago is severely underated. I remembering reading an article about the expansion. They said that Chicago was always a big part of modern art, and that this would be a sort of coming out party to show that the Art Institute + MCA are influential (but not so much as NYC/London/Paris, but near it).

I don't it's in the top 5 in the US, but not in the world, there are some amazing places in the world that have a lot older and more historic and significant art.

But hey, lets face it... even if Chicago had the best of the best, people would still presume NYC was a better museum city.

In addition to the Met and Moma, NYC has an awesome collection - the Frick, the Guggenheim, Whitney, Brooklyn, erman, and many others. So for art, I'd say it clearly excels and is in a camp with Paris and London. But with other museums, Chicago is really on a fast track -Field, Science and Industry, Shedd, etc. In that realm Chicago competes favorably with the Smithsonian and probably topples NYC.
