http://www.irishquarterbirmingham.com/dev-concept.htm

Abacus
Bradford Street,

Former 7 storey cofee warehouse and new build extension (part conversion part new building). 179 1-2 bed apartments. This one is well under way, first phase finishes mid 2006.

I have to say, that area would need A LOT of work before I'd even contemplate living in it. There's something really quite desolate about it at the moment, although the potential is clearly there.

Yes its a bit grim at the moment. I hope they dont manufacture identikit boring flats al la hockley..they will have to be cheap for the first arrivals in the area.

Once eastside warwick bar etc is built it will have plenty within walking distance could become the next big thing.

I notice that big church up on the ringroad is included I am sure that had a "for sale" sign on it not too long ago. They are talking about converting the church and adding a newbuild next to it. This will look fantastic I think. Sorry to bring up our northern cousins with almost every post but I know Manchester has something similar on the southern outskirts of the city but its surrounded by grim council tower blocks and looks a bit odd. Ours will be much better, of course

I agree that the area is desolate at the moment but i think that it will be a great place to live. There are dozens of "real" pubs tucked away in the back streets. It might not look it to the passer-by but many of these pub's are thriving and come alive at the weekend with live music and comedy nights. The Spotted Dog has a lovely walled garden at the back, wonderful for a peaceful summer evening out.

The big grey church at the top by Camp Hill island is called Trinity Church and was indeed used as a night shelter for the homeless for many years. On a slightly grimmer note, many years ago back in my youth they moved the graves to make room for the new road. At the time i drank with a load of Irish lads who all worked in the building trade, they told me stories of the men who were moving the graves, opening lead lined coffins and fishing around in the fluids that were the remains of the victorian corpses looking for jewellery..

The developers of the Paragon Hotel were very shrewd when they took it over, it was a doss house and was in a right old state and surrounded by industry, they must of got it for a song. In a few years time it will be sitting in the middle of all this new/redevelopment.

As for the location, you just cannot knock it. You are on the doorstep of the markets and city center shops, the art and entertainment of The Custard factory and the Icon Gallery. The Airport a straight bus ride away down the Coventry Road in one direction, and the pubs of Moseley and shops of Kings Heath in the other, all leading onto the M42.

Heres the church and this confirms it was for sale....doesnt seem like 5 years ago though my how time flys. This photo doent really give much scale as it is a imposing building.

Dead right about the hotel its actaully quite a nice building in its own right already in the area. Hmm, has it changed its name since this photo? I am sure this is the same building.

The aim I believe is to evenually make Bradford street a tree lined avenue and regenerate Digbeth High Street. Abacus is the first step in a ten year program and the view of the city from abacus is incredible. Deritend Bridge / Coach station area will be the best chance of getting something a little avant garde as much of the rest are large old factory / warehouses.

Not maked on here are the wholesale markets which may be relocated out of the city centre too.

Great find there Ms Fox I was going to do something similar for the benefit of the forum but no need its already been done.

I remembered that there is a little park in the area too behind the paragon hotel, an entrance to this is hiding on Moseley road , so the place isnt completly devoid of living facilities. Used to take the dog of the owner of a printers we used to use in the area for a walk here. Needs work but will scrub up well.

Stephen and woody I think we are all talking about the same building here is google earths rendition of it. It is prominant on the ring road.

Is the church that's been converted the one with 4 spires, was used as a shelter for the homeless?

Yes, you are right, it was called The Chamberlain Hotel when it opened.

I could not agree with you more as to the beauty of the building, another fine example of victorian terracotta architecture that can be found dotted around the area. Next time you are down there take a look at The White Swan on Bradford Street.

As for the church being up for sale ?: I have recently returned from living overseas for 12 years so i missed that one.

Just checkeed the Locate in Birmingham Development schedule and I found the following:

Phase 7: Started August 04
Phases 5&6: started late 04
Phase 3: started early 05
Phase 4 early 06
Abacus: Completion mid 06 (should be UC)
Deritend Bridge ?
Harrison Drape site: TBC
Trinity Centre : TBC
Also Smithfield 1 should start early 06 with 2&3 following.

I think someone should go and take some photos. This place is probably the biggest development site in Birmingham at the moment.

That's the church I meant:

"TRINITY CENTRE
This prominent Grade II Listed building was former Holy Trinity Church on Birmingham's Old Camp Hill. Subjected to severe unsympathetic alterations over the years, current proposals rectify these works, bringing it back into commercial use.

The scheme will see areas of the church opened up and part removal of floors to create a full height atrium with gallery access to a range of offices suites. Internally the ornate plaster mouldings to the altar screen will be restored to create a splendid back drop to meeting spaces.

Reflecting this scheme, permission has also been granted for 24 new residential apartments on the adjacent land. This forms a sensitive modern neighbour enhancing the 'gateway' location at the top of Camp Hill which has remained vacant since the completion of the Ring Road. "

from http://www.irishquarterbirmingham.co...onal-stock.htm

in fact that Hotel was also a Homless shelter too, the ones with the bladder problems on the lower floors...
