The REFURB/restoration thread
thought i would start a thread on skyscraper refurbs considering a few these days are getting new facades ect.
latest is St Martins Tower (mentioned by a few of you in gossip thread). this is its 2nd or 3rd makeover since completed in 75. The vertical columns are getting Alpolic strips, to i suppose give it more a "modern" look. might work? in this pic you can see the new strips with protective covers still on. also spaced apart but ive been assured they will be in one continuos line.

the 5storey SUGAR HOUSE is being restored. the 29m high cnr turret was highest point of a hotel in australia in 1879.

Black Collums won't help if they don't fix the plant room at the top and the windows.

It'd look good if they were silvery, though.

The ceiling of the ground floor is way too low - they should demolish the first office level and make the lobby/shops double height.

I could be mistaken, but whilst travelling through Victoria Park near Broadway yesterday, it looked as though they were doing something to the old redundant St Martins Tower signage atop (which hasn't been illuminated in the evenings for yonks) on the southern crown. If so, new naming rights perhaps???

To give me piece of mind on it, CULWULLA, will you have time today to take a pic of it ie. the southern crown of the old St Martins Tower. It's visible from around the street level steps of the Energy Australia building, opposite Town Hall Square.

Speaking of refurbs have a look at the facade of MLC in the background of this pic:
![]() Looks exactly like Nauru House did 10 years ago with the concrete falling apart and stains all over, needs to be completely reclad.

i dont think MLC needs to be relad just patched at painted a bright white or sand blasted .
cladding would be very costly and would hide the main features of MLC which are the scooped planels and tappered facade.

Cul, have you heard any news about WHEN MLC might be cleaned up. I remember we were talking about this a couple years ago i.e tests being done on the facade to see what could be done. I would look so much better if it was pure white or even better if it was a shimmering silver paint job with a big silver 30 metre scoop on top......Avatar where are ya ?

The MLC spruce-up was supposed to have taken 7 years in different phases and was going to be undertaken by The Queensland Investment Corporation & General Property Trust. They even even shelled out press releases on the matter at the time. There were a few tests taken out in small patches on the King St side almost 3 years ago, but since then nothing has eventuated.
