I don't know a city between mountains with a river in the middle and a castle surrounded by a artificial canal.

Heidelberg, Augsburg, Regensburg

Most of these barrock fortifications don't exist anymore. In Zurich we stil have the "Schanzengraben" canal and the "Bauschänzli" island as a remain. But that's all... a pity, I love them. Solothurn, the Swiss barrock city still has a lot of these fortifications.

Johnny got it: it's Salzburg, Austria

No.3 (sorry strangly in the title it's still "2" even though in the post it's 3...) is a bit more difficult - but have to go, sorry. Keep on trying

Salzburg

I thought of Salzburg but I thought: Nah, this can't be Salzburg. The hills and the castles are different. I didn't saw the castle in the upper picture

The gardens on the lower side of the river are also a hint but the main one was the castle and the cathedral underneath.

Salzburg is one of the best-kept classical city in Europe.

It's really bad most cities in Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Germany, Spain, former-USSR and most of Asia and Latin America, with some cities in Italy, Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Poland(Especially Warsaw), Sweden, North Africa... lost their classical beauty.

Cities in Oceania or Western half of North America often has shorter history, and they are barely developed in 19th century. And their classical architecture is not very important... even if we preserve them they would be very unnatural to build those classical structure in a newly-created city in early 20th century. (Major Canadian cities like Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton were small rural village, while Brandon and Winnipeg was a small town due to fur trade. Vancouver was also a small town by then)

Kuesel, you should post a lot of them... they look very different from 19th century to now, and it's really nice.
