The CUBE | Commercial Street | 72m | 17 fl | Comp.
I think I would be the first to kick of discussions on views regarding the new Cube development in the mailbox.
There is a cool video on the following this Website showing where the cube in located ( I didn’t realise it was so close to the mailbox itself ) It looks amazing and would be impressed if it looked like the pictures Taken from IC Birmingham "Rush on for homes in the city's Cube Jan 16 2006 Hundreds of people have already registered an interest in The Cube - Birmingham's latest city living development next to the award-winning Mailbox scheme. Alan Chatham, director of Birmingham Development Company, the firm behind the new scheme, said: "An enormous amount of research has gone into finding out what people actually want in their ideal new home and it has been put to good use. "The Cube is not about repeating a standard formula for apartments it is about setting a new one. It will deliver futuristic homes, of an outstanding calibre, imaginatively designed and easy to respond to." With interest already building in the city for the apartments, since planning was announced, the web-site has proven invaluable with more than 475 people registering their interest online before Christmas alone. All apartments are to be sold on a first come, first served basis from as early as February through a series of private releases handled by agents Knight Frank" |

Well, we may as well use this one now...
THE CUBE HAS BEEN GRANTED PLANNING PERMISSION!!! Does this mean the ODPM are fine with it? It is amazing considering under council guidance The Cube is classed as a 'tall building'...

yes, bio you are right.
when the planning application went in, the ODPM decided that they wanted to look at it to make sure the council were able to make such a big decission by themselves (very nice of em) and it would appear that they have decided we are and that the council has said yes. THE CUBE IS FULLY APPROVED AND NOW AWAITING NOTHING IN THEPLANING PROCESS....GET THOSE DIGGERS GOING!

I saw 2 very impressive displays at the Mailbox on Saturday, 2 huge pink cubes one inside the Mall & one by the canal side. The start of this development is imminent>

I wish we could have the Swiss Re instead. I prefer my buildings to look, um, graceful.
Anyway, each to their own and it will be great to have another tall top spec building like this in Birmingham and the rooftop restaurant if it turns out anything like the renders will be a fine addition to Birmingham. It will be one of those places where national reporters or TV programs always come if they are reporting Brum, like the use Brindley place at the moment. I wonder if you will be able to see it from the A38? |

I think the height is down to the fact that the developer will want it to be seen, so I guess it will be seen from the A38 or thereabouts. It certainly will be seen from Broad St!

And plus - Swiss Re would look funny there... in fact the only place I can think that it would fit is where the Wesleyan stands...

Up close on the big screens they had at the Mailbox the building looked very interesting & quite clever & intricate. I wouldn't like to be the glazing company contracted to do this work though, all the windows were different shapes! I think it will make Selfridges look fairly ordinary, this will be a class building, it may only be 17 storeys high, but it will look stunning.

I think this will look fabulous - really good.
Are the windows inside the atrium are different? The fretwork around the building (I believe) is not glazed so that won't be too bad. Lots of different colours in the atrium though!

Behind the copper coloured "fretwork", to me it looked glazed. From inside the building, certain parts of this fretwork were exposed so you could see the outside world.

It looked a copper colour, but couldn't make out if it was metal or some other material. It did look really good though, pop along to the Mailbox & have a look ...... I shan't be going for a while, I got carried away in the Thomas Pink shop & spent £79 on a shirt!! Regretted it the minute I walked out!

I have seen the video images - they are good aren't they?
So you stay at Radisson and shop at Thos Pink? Drive a Porsche by any chance?

Wow, love this development. The box mass disappears behind the elegant and playful detailing of the cladding, love the view looking out from the Atrium bit, its like looking out from a Persian harem or Indian temple. Im liking the exploding roof too, it doesnt look added on as an afterthought as someone comment, but instead it is coming out from withing the building and should prove an exciting place to be in itself. Would love something like this in Canary Wharf or on the South Bank.

I got a mailshot from Cube this weekend with a memory stick. On it there is a video of the Mailbox, and as it flies through the back of the development toward the canal, there is The Cube.
It looks amazing. Really really stunning. I was nearly sick with excitement
