I have been living in Paris for 10 years and never had any problem.
Nevertheless you should avoid walking at night in some areas: especially the northern part of Paris city for instance.
Some places in the suburbs can be slightly dangerous, but I'm pretty sure you'll be hosted in Paris city, won't you?
On the whole Paris is not more dangerous than Bcn imo.

Have a nice stay in Paris !

Hola Keros:

I've walked around Paris alone at all times of day and never felt any danger..

If you keep to populated areas and don't speak to much with strangers at night you'll be just fine!

Paris can be dangerous at night, near Stalingrad, La Goutte d'Or, Barbès, Cours de Vincennes, les Halles... in the metro or the RER at night too, if there are few people. But that's not the Bronx, if you take care , there's no risk

Just don't walk at night in some places with a map and those huge bags that scream "I'M A TOURIST" and you'll be fine

But of course, it's a very big city with lot of people and lot of tourists.
Beware of pickpockets and cross the street carrefully: Parisian drivers are mad.

well, you may be unlucky

i am an experienced traveller and have spent a lot of time in london, moscow, new york, san francisco, russia in general. i was visiting paris for the first time this fall. while walking on the metro with a friend i was approached randomly by a black guy, who, without any warning, approached me and hit me hard in the head with his fist and caused my lip to bleed. i also suffered temporary hearing loss. the punch in itself was no big deal, what worried me though was the fact that no one on the metro station bothered to ask how i was or did anything to stop the guy (he walked away). at the same time i don't want to exaggerate. i've travelled a lot and this is the first time something like this has happened to me. just saying, you never know.

unfortunately this kind of stories could happen barely anywhere.
Crazy people exist everywhere, even if that's true that it seems that there are more in "big" cities.
But I would not call Paris unsafe, while some of the suburbs are really. But who would go there????

I've lived in Paris for 34 years (since my birth), only 2 big problems (1. A crazy boy - I mean, really crazy, direct to psychiatric hospital ! - 2. A racist attack from a group who just wanted to attack white people in the "beautiful districts".)

So, the best I can say : don't be paranoid, just be cautionious !

I have personal example! 3 weeks ago my girlfriend and i were celebrating our 3 three years old relationship!
We were at St michel (Notre dame quarter) and some young people (probably from 18th arrondissement or suburbs) began to search for fighting with others white people... (Trust me it's true)

My girlfriend and i decided to leave this area before the police coming.

When you look at certain Tv broadcast about violence, they show evidences that even prestigious place like Champs Elysees are not sure especially when you are tourist!

Paris is probably not the worst place for violence but it become less sure than before

I've never had any problem in my life... except in Paris, near the Champs-Elysées (people who cared about my mobile phone)

But I don't think that Paris is more dangerous than other great major western cities. It often depends on luck...
