Mt. Kopaonik - the jewel of Serbia
Kopaonik is the highest mountain in southern part of central Serbia.
The highest peak is 2,017 metres above sea level, Pancic's Peak. Kopaonik also has a national park, as declared in 1981. The national park's area is 11,810 hectares, and is spread over the central part of the Kopaonik plateau. It is the largest mountain in Serbia, more than 100 km long. Kopaonik's flora is characterized by a large number of autochthonous plant species (the Balkan beech, fir, spruce, yew, several kinds of maple, pine and oak). The fauna is also diverse but its concentration varies, depending on the quality of the habitat. This mountain has enormous resources for the development of tourism. The entire park is characterised by its extraordinary natural beauty: vast expanses of grassland, picturesque forests composed of a wide variety of tree species, beauty spots, deep river gorges. The snow blanket lasts a long time on this mountain and in view of its good relief, there are excellent conditions for the further expansion of winter tourism there. Sports and recreation are key factors to the tourism of Kopaonik. Kopaonik is mainly a destination for skiing and snowboarding. There are various other activities as well, such as tennis. Other features which attract tourists are a luxurious hotel, and entertainment. Kopaonik has many cafes, bars and night clubs. The tourist resort on the Kopaonik includes hotels, rest houses, chairlifts, excellent ski slopes and many other tourist facilities. The Kopaonik is well-connected with the main transport routes in Serbia. The central part of Kopaonik with the tourist center and ski slopes are linked with the Ibar Highway by a modern tarmac road. The nearest airport is in Niš. Nearby Stara Planina will eventually become Serbia's premier ski resort. Kopaonik will remain popular but cater to families, beginners.
Of course, until Nis starts serving low cost airlines south Serbia will continue losing millions every month, and not just from tourism. Kop had 2500 Brits this winter but only through charters and a during a very limited timeframe. Skiing conditions were fine well into May. |

Ahh, nice, doesn't look too big, however why are some lifts totally independent from the others? Wouldn't it make sense to connect them all?

Stara Planina: Mega Project in Serbia
"You cannot just make one investment and think that the world will come to see it on the next year".
Paul E. Mathews Canadian Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners Ltd., designer of a number of Olympic and World Championship Alpine competition venues, among which also the forthcoming Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi, Russia, is one of the most renowned companies in the field of mountain design, resort planning and landscape architecture. Now they are looking at the SEE region and Property Xpress could not but get in touch with Mr. Mathews, the company’s President, in order to inquire about their projects in the region. What is Ecosign’s role in the rehabilitation of Bulgarian Vitosha Mountain? Is the company involved in any projects in Bansko, as has been released earlier this year? How is the work on the initiated by the Serbian government Stara Planina project, which may expand into an international mega-resort, advancing? What will it include and what type of customers is it aimed at? Have Stara Planina’s developers and investors been chosen already? What kind of project is Ecosing working on at the moment in Odessa? How many projects are the Whistler-based designers proceeding on at the moment in Romania? Mr. Mathews answers all these questions in the present interview. He also reflects on issues such as: Will Vitosha remain number one for the people in Sofia only or it holds potential for attracting a wider spectrum of tourists? What are the issues about Bansko? Why the Sochi region is destined to keep up its attractiveness from tourism point of view for many years after Sochi Winter Olympic Games 2014? Will Ukrainian mountain resorts follow its example? What is that slows down the development of Smotrich and Bystrets? How many years does it take to develop a world class destination from scratch? What problems are famous mountain resorts in Switzerland and France faced with at the moment and what is the solution? |
