Chevron Tower
Houston, USA HEIGHT: 221m/725 feet FLOORS: 52 floors COMPLETION: 1982 ARCHITECT: Caudill Rowlett Assoc. This building is often overlooked in the city's skyline. This is partially because of its location, near the fringes of the business core, and because of the number of taller buildings shadowing it. The Chevron Tower should get more attention as the area around it is redeveloped with a new baseball stadium, a new basketball and ice hockey arena, new hotel, and the assorted shops, restaurants and condominiums planned for the area. As it is now, the horizontal stripes cause some to confuse it with the nearby First City Tower or the Lyric Centre. But the Chevron Tower forgoes First City's harsh lines and cuts and instead favors a more sculpted look, with stepped chevrons approaching the roof line. This 52-story tower is one of a growing number of downtown buildings that are shifting from the underground tunnel system to the raised sky bridge method of linking to its neighbors. This is mostly to economic reasons. It's cheaper and easier to build a bridge over a busy street, instead of burrowing beneath it, avoiding hassles with utility lines and the growing number of downtown buildings sporting underground parking garages. ![]() ![]()

6.5/10..Not happening for me. What were they thinking with attached portion and the setbacks? The colors are rather dull also. It does get some credit for it's uniqueness though.

oh man.. from this angle it really looks like the Revenue House in Singapore!!!
![]() Anyway... the edges are very sharp and the facade is just ok.. Probably an all over glass cladding would have looked much more spectuclar! Any night pics btw?7/10

Nice shape, but it is too bulky. Last edited by Wu-Gambino; February 7th, 2004 at 12:46 AM. |

I just want to point out that the ten setbacks on the top of the building are designed to be ten "chevrons" as a symbol for the company.

The design form it alrite...but the cladding kills it...such a cladding only makes it look cheap. 6/10.

The facade really dances with the light, and the setbacks towards the top, along with the indentations on the sides, make it livelier than a plain box. But it's still chunky, and a bit bland - they needed, perhaps, to put a bit more contrast into some of the different sections of the facade...

52 floors huh? It would look the same @ 5.2 floors.
The glass cladding saves this one a little. Score = 5.2. Whoops, I mean 5.5
