Arabs make up a minority (40-45%) of the population, the rest (55 %) are black African

Most 'arabs' aren't arab by ethnicity or appearance, the term is loosely used to describe those who have embraced arab culture - usually defined by people whose first language is arabic. If you just go by the 'ethnic' definition then syrians, algerians, egyptians, iraqis aren't arab either.

dude you made me waste 10 minutes looking for that post - it was 3 years ago!!! i was being sarcastic at the time because everyone in the picture was "black", and in Kartoum, which is in the "arab" north.
at the time most people didn't know that "arab" was a cultural term independent of race and all anyone saw was blacks killing blacks. which didn't make any since.

Yes, the photos were taken during a sandstorm. Sandstorms seems to be a normal occurrence for Khartoum, according to many galleries that I had observed. My 2 Cents.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

I have spent over 2 years in Khartoum on construction of Kartoum Nort Power Station. In 1992 the country appeared to be in total economical catastrophe with war, etnic and religious conflicts. And suddenly, without outsting the Regime, with the same rulers - such architecture, such investmenrs...
Unbelievable! I have also looked in Google Earth, where Khartoun is pretty well developed to high resolution and found many more new projects.

If it's anything like egypt - which I imagine it is - the yellow buses aren't owned by the govt but might be regulated

The arabian peninsula also loves white cars lol
