The Weather Thread

first widespread frost of the autumn tonight, innit...

SSC forum metro areas:

Braemar, Aberdeenshire (the coldest low-level place in the UK, in terms of annual average temperature) – note: couldn’t find a weather station for braemar so Aberdeen will have to do instead:

Scilly, Cornwall (the warmest place in the UK, in terms of annual average temperature):

Goddamn arctic winds. I'm freezing me bits off... Cloud is on the way now so we'll get a lashing of rain. Oh I love the British weather though. There's nothing better lying snug in your bed and hearing the wind and rain lashing outside. You feel all safe. Well, I do. Its just when it starts thundering that it gets tense.

You see, this is what I hate about the British mentality towards weather. We get told for weeks how unseasonably warm it is, and next thing you know everyone's getting worked up over a frost.

Just wait until the first snow arrives, then it will be panic central.

So cold here in Surrey, down to 4C already. It should be -4C sometime this week at night too

worked up? who's getting worked up?

personally i'm loving it. nothing like a bit of arctic air: clear frosty nights, crisp dry days. finally it feels like autumn after all that mild, damp muggy shit.

in recent years in london there's usually been at least one occasion every winter where snow's settled, even if more often than not all it's amounted to is a light dusting followed by a quick thaw.

because i'm bored, and sick of the current dreary mild weather outside, here are some of the more recent snowy days in the capital:

8th January, 2003:
Heavy snow (morning/afternoon). Stuck around for a good couple of days. High 1.6C, Low -1.8C

28th January, 2004:
Evening thunder snow! Stuck around til the next day. High 5.9C, Low -2C

4th March, 2005:
Morning snow, all gone by the afternoon. High 6.9C, Low -0.7C

w/ thanks to: can't remember exact source, someone on flickr

24th January, 2007:
Light overnight dusting, quickly melted. High 5C, Low -0.3C

8th Feb, 2007:
Morning/afternoon snow, slowly turned to sleet and slush. High 5.1C, Low 0.6C

I agree completely. But before you know it, everyone will be telling you how cold it is. If its not too warm, it has to be too cold.

British weather and temperature varies wildly. We can never really know when it is right. And the British are all a moany old bunch anyway.

The weather does vary very regularly. However, the actual range of conditions isn't that great. Compare to continental climates for instance.

Beautiful sunny day here today and looks like its going to stay that way until sunday.
Bright and cold - fantastic.
Everything looks all zingy during the day with a pure cobalt sky and then softens off with a deep amber and saffron sunset.
Life is grand!
