Melbournes Lanes

Tony P was here in Melbourne last week and he showed me a thousand places that I've never been too. I generally stick to the main streets in Melbourne, which meant I've missed out on some of the most awesome photo opportunities in the city! I've taken more photos in the last 4 days than I have in the last 4 months!

Anyway, enough ranting...

Duckboard Pl

What the hell is that thing?

Flinders lane closed off for G20

Phones 3 stories up and really creepy music make this lane special.

So I did!

Awesome part of Flinders Lane...

Center Place is a must visit. It's also part of the main lane way network linking Bourke St Mall to Flinders St.

graffiti?

Just outside of block arcade.

Love the windows..

It was absolutely *freezing*

Standing in the Halo you hear a man's voice. It's very strange..

The next day the weather had improved enormously.
Looking up market st.

Mitre Tavern in Bank PL is so out of place. I love it.

Little Collins.

Haunted bookshop? Ok.

Hardware lane is a very popular place for lunch. I was so freaking hungry.

Food!

Wait, that's not a lane!

There are hundreds more on the site...

Awesome! Been to the haunted bookshop a couple of times but never bought anything. Where's the halo and the phones??

Great pics as usual Dan. You've captured the most unique part of Melbourne perfectly and shown how if differs so much from the rest of the country.

Mitre Tavern is a cool building. Although it's widely accepted that Governor Latrobe's residence built in 1837 is the oldest building still standing in Melbourne, there are reports that the rear section of the Mitre, before it was extended to what you see now, dates from Melbourne's foundation year of 1835.

What type of books do they sell there? Is the name of the store a giveaway in this respect?

LOL I was thinking to ask exactly that while scouring the pics.

Indeed they are and indeed he has. It's true the very diverse the street life of Melbourne is greatly different from other urban areas of Australian cities. Having been to most of the places shown in the pics a few times, nothing beats the buzz of Hardware Lane IMO. Full of vitality for 1 1/2 city blocks. The closest I can think of is the main restaurant & cafe strip in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.

BTW Dan-bo. Besides the wonderful street life pics, I love the 2 looking-up-@-scraper shots; "Looking up Market St" & "Wait, that's not a lane!"

Best.Melbun.series.evah!

Muse: I think if you are interested in magic, the occult, satan, the paranormal, tarot, astrology, angels, UFOs, mythology, phychic stuff and so forth then you will probably find what your looking for there

Flinders lane gets used for TV commercials alot, as it looks very European (in some parts)
Asian company's love to film their car ads in there, as it's cheaper to film those ads here then go to europe to film them.

You didn't go to ACDC lane!

ACDC Lane is great at night time with the bars they have down their, especially the Cherry Bar if your into old rock music.

I've never been to the Mitre Tavern, I must go it looks so cool.

Great pics! Its great to see those crowed little laneways, very much like Europe. Unlike the dangerous deserted ones in Perth lol, and its probably the same for all the other cities in AUstralia too!

I actually prefer pedestrian areas when they are more open...I'm more likely to use them. Maybe that's why I prefer Brisbane . Great shots, and it does look very European!
