City nicknames and "slogans/sayings"
So what´s your (or some other city´s) nickname? Or is there some sort of "slogan"/"saying"? And I don´t mean names used in everyday language.
A few I came up with: NYC - "The big apple", "The city that never sleeps", London - (saying) "When I man is tired of London he´s tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford" Paris - "City of lights", "City of Romance" St:Peterburg - "Paris of the North" Shanghai - "Paris of the East", "Pearl of the orient" Rome - "The eternal city"

It was but they needed a more powerful approach and came up with "Asia's World City"
HK was also called "New York of The East", "New York of Asia", "Manhattan of Asia" or "Honghattan" because of it's skyline and high quantity of skyscrapers ![]() Singapore is more known as "Lion City" than "Garden City"

I have never heard of those names before. Unlike what you're portraying, Hong Kongers are not in perpetual competition with New Yorkers.

Singapore -
The Garden City, The Lion City Slogan for Singapore - " Uniquely Singapore " By social or political analysts - The Nanny State, Disneyland with a death penalty. By unhappy foreign politicians - The red dot. A piece of snot. Tiny Singapore. Last edited by teh; December 6th, 2006 at 08:24 AM. |

Yes they're not but these names were given because of the skyline.

Pearl of the Orient has been around far longer, while the City of Life was a marketing slogan used by the tourism board a number of years ago. Since then, they changed it to Asia's World City.

Stockholm: "Venice of the North".
Shanghai: "Whore of the Orient" (HK in the "Pearl of the Orient" I think). Malmö: "City of Parks". "Haur du sitt Malmö haur du sitt varlden" (saying in the local dialect that translates "Have you seen Malmö, you've seen the world). Copenhagen: "Byen" ("The City", in Danish).

That's a slum
Maybe you mean because of the last pope's comment: "If God is Brazilian (a common saying: Deus e Brasileiro), then the pope is Carioca (person from Rio)"Zurich: Old slogan: Little Big City Nowadays: Downtown Switzerland But that's slogans by the tourism board. The original nicknames are "Limmatstadt" (because of the main river) or "Zwinglistadt" (after the famous reformer)
