LONDON | Brit Oval Redevelopment | 25,000 | Approved
Surrey to build hotel at The Oval
http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/surr...ry/276911.html Cricinfo staff January 19, 2007 Surrey have announced further extensive redevelopment plans for The Oval which include building a four-star hotel. An extra 2000 seats will be added with the Surrey Tavern along with the Lock and Laker stands being replaced. The chief executive Paul Sheldon said: "There is intense pressure on all grounds that host international cricket to provide high-quality facilities. It is vital The Oval continues to strive to produce the best spectator facilities of any cricket stadium." The ground has undergone dramatic changes over recent years with the new OCS stand opened during the 2005 season providing an impressive backdrop, also housing corporate and media facilities. The Oval won't be the first ground to expand into the hotel sector, Old Trafford led the way with their successful Lodge while Derbyshire sold off some of their land to a budget hotel firm. £35-million redevelopment for the OvalJan 19 2007
http://icsouthlondon.icnetwork.co.uk...name_page.html By Raj Johal SURREY have revealed plans for a £35-million redevelopment of the Pavilion End at the Brit Oval. The proposals for the Kennington ground - targeted for completion by the summer of 2009 for the next Ashes series - are in the early stages but involve the improvement of existing facilities at the oldest remaining part of the ground. They will see the creation of a new integrated stand and hotel design - in partnership with the Arora International Hotel Group - and will boost the overall capacity from 23,000 to 25,000. By demolishing the existing Surrey Tavern, the front entrance to the ground would be completely opened up and finished with an elegant piazza, allowing the original pavilion building to be fully appreciated by visitors and passers-by. The current Lock and Laker Stands would be replaced with a new stand built to house an additional 2,000 seats, whilst a four-star hotel is planned to back onto the stand. The Brit Oval has recently completed the building of the iconic £25million OCS stand, which opened in 2005 at the Vauxhall End of the ground. That took the capacity from 18,500 to 23,000, providing state-of-the art facilities for both cricket fans and members of the local community. And these new proposals will replace and vast-ly improve the ageing facilities at the opposite Pavilion End of the ground and make it one of the top cricketing venues in the country.. HOK Sport, one of the world's leading stadia architects and the group which delivered the OCS stand, has once again been appointed as the design team for the new project. Surrey chief executive Paul Sheldon stressed the significance of these latest developments. He said: "There is intense pressure on all grounds that host international cricket to provide high quality facilities for both members and visitors. "It is therefore vital that the Brit Oval continues to strive to produce the best viewing and spectator facilities of any cricket stadium in the world. "With this in mind, it is our intention to be in the strongest possible position to maintain and improve our standing in this regard in the coming years. "We hope this project will benefit not only the Brit Oval, but also contribute greatly to the standing and regeneration of our local area. "There are a number of important people who need to be consulted about these proposals, and we are already in the early stages of discussion with Lambeth Council and our landlord, the Duchy of Cornwall, who have both expressed their support in principle for the project. "There are also a number of local community and residents' groups with whom we will have extensive dialogue to ensure the project is a truly co-operative one." |

good find, jaeger.
let's hope the new development compliments the OCS stand and follows the boundary rope as tightly as it does. in fact surely the peter may stand needs replacing with something a little closer to the boundary.

Cheers for the info, edennewstairs, it seems that the Oval is being redeveloped in stages, and could eventually be a 30,000+ Venue.

We see this as a truly wonderful partnership that would bring further employment opportunities to the area”. http://www.surreycricket.com/the-bri...redevelopment/ |

HOK Sport in rumpus over new Oval development
31 August 2007 By Helen Crump Olympic stadium architect HOK Sport has found itself embroiled in a row with south London residents over a proposed £35 million extension to the famous Oval cricket ground. Pressure group United Friends of Oval claims the mixed-use scheme — including a new stand to boost the ground’s capacity to 25,000, and a neoclassical 170-bed hotel — is of substandard quality, and has called for an architectural competition to be held. The proposal, funded by Arora Hotels International, replaces three existing stands and also includes an underground car park and delivery area. The style of the hotel is understood to have been influenced by the landowner, the Duchy of Cornwall. A spokeswoman for UFO claimed the project failed to match the quality of earlier additions at the legendary site. “The proposed development is no match for the distinctive grace of the landmark [HOK Sport-designed] stand at the north end of the ground,” she said. She added that the proposed development would overshadow neighbouring flats and cause noise and disruption, and accused the developer of insufficient consultation with locals before plans were submitted to Lambeth Council. But client Surrey County Cricket Club defended the project, calling the criticism “entirely subjective”. A spokeswoman rejected the allegations concerning noise and overshadowing. She also insisted SCCC had carried out “significant” consultation, and had submitted comprehensive reports to the council. “We believe the design of the scheme, which has involved some of the world’s foremost architectural minds at HOK Sport and the Duchy of Cornwall, is of an extremely high standard and therefore does not warrant an architectural competition.” SCCC is also understood to be planning another development: a mirror-image stand, without a hotel, on the other side of the ground’s 100-year-old pavilion, to sit next to the current scheme. Councillors will consider a planning application for the current proposal on October 3. HOK was unavailable for comment. |

Council rejects Oval fire fear
* Published: 23 January 2008 16:36 * Author: Alasdair Reisner * More by this Author * Last Updated: 23 January 2008 16:36 Council rejects Oval fire fear * Increase image * View all images Stand given all-clear by consultants despite HSE claims that gasometers could explode Planners have poured cold -water on Health and Safety Executive fears of a fireball disaster at the Oval Cricket Ground and agreed to the redevelopment of the south London facility. Proposals for the construction of a six-storey stand with space for 5,000 fans and a 168 bedroom hotel will go before Lambeth Borough Council's planning committee next Tuesday with the recommendation of the council's planning department. The move comes despite earlier HSE claims that both it and Southern Gas Networks, owner of the nearby Kennington Gasholders, are "of the opinion that large-scale major accidents at the gas holder station are both foreseeable and credible". A previous application for the project had been refused by the council in October last year over fears that it could cause an explosion at the gas holders. But joint developers Surrey County Cricket Club and Arora International submitted a new application including a report from consultants BT&P and Hyder which said the chances of a major gas explosion that would endanger those in the ground was so low as to be ruled out. It added that even events such as gas leaks and flash fires were highly unlikely. The council then commissioned fire expert Renaissance Risks to carry out an independent check of the BT&P/Hyder report. It said a fireball event was not credible and found that the new stand would in fact provide a greater degree of protection to spectators than the current situation. A report from the council's planning team recommending approval for the development states that: "It is considered that the council has given the HSE advice adequate consideration and has taken reasonable measures to fully understand that advice in order to make an informed decision." French construction manger Coteba was appointed last year to oversee the £35 million job. |
