Well, at the sidelines the distance is already pretty short because they lowered the pitch a few years ago.
Behind the goals the stands will be rebuilt to close the gap.
The outter structure will be kept though.
In the end it should be a pure football stadium.

Good stuff. Pure football stadiums are so much better.
I heard Stuttgart wants to get rid of the 400m track too.
What about Nuremberg? I guess Berlin will keep it.

Well Nurembergs stadium is not too old.
When they built it they just made the big mistake of putting an athletics track in.
The stadium was also being renovated for the world cup (the pitch was lowered for exmaple) so it will stay like it is now.

Berlin has just gotten a big renovation for quite a lot of money so the Olympiastadion will stay in service as it is of course.
Even though they are now debating whether they should sell the naming rights.

But Stuttgart wants to change something thats correct.
They are right now thinking about either building a new 50,000 to 60,000 stadium. The other option would be to turn the Gottlieb-Daimler stadium into a pure football arena aswell.
I hope that they will built a new 60k stadium.
The current stadium is great for athletics but not for football. Even when turned into a pure football arena.
And the state of Baden-Württemberg needs something new and big to equal Bavarias Allianz-Arena.

Yes, it will have 3 tiers going all around.
It will also get a new roof partly transparent and with solar cells on top.
The floodlight masts will dissappear of course.
The exterior will be a full glass facade, but the current structure is being kept.

Btw: As i said: In Stuttgart they are thinking whether they should built a new stadium or to turn the old one into a pure football arena.
I havent seen this newspaper pic before though. Is it new?

The stands behind the goal are to far away from the pitch to be considered a real football stadium though.

No. It's used only for football, right? It doesn't have running tracks, does it? So it's a pure football stadium already. And there's a difference between a pure and real football stadium.

Correct, thats the reason why they will rebuilt the stands behind the goals to bring them close to the pitch.

The Frankenstadion is actually fairly old, it just got a major make-over in the late 80s.

But it's good to see one of the last few relicts of the 70s disappear. The Weserstadion reminds me of crappy places like the old Müngersdorfer Stadion or the Rheinstadion. I still remember watching a game in Cologne, standing close to the fence behind one of the goals. You could hardly make out what was happening at the other end of the pitch.

Btw. After the construction works the stadium should have 80-100 exec boxes.
Also, a pier close to the stadium will make sure that visitors can come by boat.

Here is an interview from the werder-magazine about the new stadium with pics.

Great news:
Werder is now officially allowed to enlarge the stadium to 50.000.
Construction start will probably already be this year and could be finished by the end of 2008 already.
