Images of Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (Clark)
Metro Manila's Future Main and Current LCC airport

The Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) will be a premier gateway of the Philippines in the next 10 years. It is one of the biggest avaiation complexes in Asia with its two 3.2 kilometer parallel runways that will be extended to 4 kilometers to accomodate new geration wide-bodied aircraft. An Executive Order by the National Government has designated it as the Philippines future premier gateway site. It is also designed as a logistic hub where the Airport Complex will be key to prompt delivery of goods and services to major destinations in the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world. DMIA is certified by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) with ratings of Category I for Precision Approach Runway and Category IX for the Emergency Services. It is well equipped with Instrument Landing System, Navigational Aids, Meteorological Equipment, Complete Airfield Lighting System.

It's also an alternative landing strip for the US Space Shuttle!

CLARK, PAMPANGA - Clark International Airport Corp (CIAC)will spend P18.5 billion to make the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) a world-class logistics hub and prepare it to become the Philippines’ premier international gateway by 2010.

CIAC president and chief executive officer Victor Jose I. Luciano said construction would take three years, beginning late 2007.

By 2010, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila will have reached full capacity and international flights will be transferred to DMIA.

Of the P18.5 billion, P13.56 billion will be used for civil and architectural works, P125.54 million for navigational systems, P55.96 million for a meteorological facility, P704.82 million for airport lighting, P3.99 billion for airport utilities and P75.62 million for airport maintenance equipment.

As part of civil and architectural works, CIAC will build a larger passenger terminal (Terminal 2) next to the existing terminal for P2 billion.

The airport is designed to handle up to five million passenger a year, or twice the traffic expected by 2011. Cargo volume is seen to triple to 450,000 tons.

Terminal 2 will be patterned after budget carrier terminals in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

“We can replicate it here because Clark’s passenger traffic comes mostly from low-cost carriers," Luciano said.

There is no problem attracting more airlines to Clark because the aeronautical, customs, and quarantine fees they pay at DMIA are almost “30 percent lower than Naia," said the executive.

Several budget carriers now fly to Clark, including the Philippines’ Cebu Pacific, Tiger Airways of Singapore and Air Asia of Malaysia. CIAC is in talks with Thai Air Asia, Viva Macau and Tair Airways of Saudi Arabia to do the same.

A large Spanish construction company with interests in European airports is among those interested to help develop the airport.

Development Bank of the Philippines “has expressed interest in funding some of the developments of the airport" and could help raise counterpart funds for any official development assistance on the project, Luciano said.

Eventually, CIAC will be supplanted by a bigger agency, the Clark International Airport Authority, which will oversee the operations at the international gateway.

LAGUINDINGAN IMTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Serving Cagayan de Oro - Iligan Corridor

Laguindingan International Airport is an international airport that is currently under construction in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental in the Philippines. This airport will cater international flights, mostly for Cagayan de Oro and other cities in Northern Mindanao.

The airport is a flagship project of the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor special development project, which covers the two key Mindanao cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, five coastal towns of Lanao del Norte and the 14 towns of Misamis Oriental's first congressional district. It is located 46 km. from the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro.

Plans for the airport have existed since 1991, but have been stymied by land acquisition and financing problems.

Groundbreaking ceremonies on the US$107 million project were held on January 11, 2006 and attended by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Laguindingan airport one of RP's most expensive, biggest projects

by Intern Thelma Balabat

Cagayan de Oro City (18 January) -- THE Laguindingan International Airport Development Project is one of the most expensive and biggest projects in the Philippines, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo told media practitioners in Cagayan de Oro City, after she launched the project in Barangay Moog, Laguindingan town, Misamis Oriental, January 11.

Located between the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in Lanao del Norte, the US$107.70 project is envisioned to boost the investment activities of the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Growth Corridor.

Pre-construction activities of the project are scheduled to start in July, this year. It is projected for completion in August 2010. In a media interaction at the Provincial Capitol with Governor Oscar S. Moreno, the President stressed the need to relocate the remaining 100 families still living within the project site.

President Arroyo said about P10 million will be taken from the initial release of P500 million for the project for the relocation of the affected families to a shoreline area not far from the site to enable them to continue their livelihood.

They will be given free house and lots by the government, the President added.

The next step, the President continued, is the construction of the access road going to the international airport site. The road project will undergo a bidding process for qualified contractors.

"However, the winning bidder will be sent to Korea for final deliberation before formally starting the project," she further said.

Thereafter, the planning director of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) will update the figures or project cost.

The President said the normal bidding process usually takes about three to four months, and another one month for the updating process.

To enable the country to pay the foreign loans for the airport project, the Philippine Infrastructure Corporation will package and develop for privatization the existing Lumbia airport in Cagayan de Oro City, she added.

President Arroyo said construction of international airports usually takes about four years to complete. The Laguindingan international airport project is one of President Arroyo's flagship projects in Mindanao. (PIA-10

Any better rendering for Laguindian.

The Philippines is actually on an airport building binge, DAvao, Iloilo,Bacolod, CDO/Iligan are done or on it's way. Cotabato, Butuan, Dipolog, Zamboanga, Kalibo are also supposed to get new airports as well. Pretty nice ones if you look at it. And that's not counting Clark and most importantly the country's main gateway, The Terminal who shall not be named. Any news too on Cebu's new terminal, I think they were already studying to increase it right!

Wonderful thread! Good to hear about these "other" airports.

As for Manila, better to pour into the Clark Airport project, turning it into another dual-runway gem for East Asia. Forget NAIA.

I think in the long run, Manila will support two airports, Clark will definitely be developed (as can be seen below) into 3 or 4 runways eventually becoming MetroManila's Main Airport. But Manila INternational will still be there I think primarily relegated to domestic and short regional flights. Still quite a ways to go though, the immediate future will have it hosting LCC's with a new LCC type terminal.

BACOLOD Airport 86% complete

THE construction of New Bacolod (Silay) Airport in Bagtic, Silay City is now 86 percent complete, Transportation and Communication Assistant Secretary Ricardo "Cano" Tan said Monday.

In a phone interview, Tan said the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental and the Silay City Government are now preparing for the soft opening of the airport next month.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be the invited guest, Tan said.

As of Monday, Tan said both the 2000-meter (2 kilometers) runway and the control tower are 100 percent finished while the passenger terminal building is 91 percent complete.

"Next week, works for landscaping and McKinley access road will commence," Tan said, adding, "We will beat the June or July deadline this year."

Sprawling in a 1,810,000-meter land area, the 8.2 billion yen or P5 billion projects was attacked by rebels on October 8, 2006.

The rebels bombed two imported electronic-controlled batching plant towers and a generator set at the airport power house.

The project construction started on August 4, 2004 and was expected to be finished on January 20, 2007.

But due to the attack, Tan said, "It can't be denied that there were delays and so we expect the completion of the project in the 3rd quarter of this year."

Funding for the project was obtained through a Philippine loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

Japanese firm Takenaka Itochu Corporation is the main contractor with Korean firm Hanjin Corporation as sub-contractor.

Once completed, the Silay airport can accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus 330 passenger planes.

But basically, it is an airport for domestic flights, and in a bid to trigger business and tourism for the central Philippines area.

It has also the design specifications on a par with an international airport, and which comply with international standards, Tan said.

Design and supervision, on the other hand, is carried out by Pacific Consultants International (PCI) while detailed design of some of the air traffic control, lighting, meteorological and aviation fuel facilities are handled by the Takenaka-Itochu joint venture, he added.

Another casino?

Meanwhile, Tan denied the report that Philippine Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) is planning to build a casino beside the Silay airport.

"There's no truth yet on this report," Tan said. source
