Wonderful Copenhagen

Yep... it's that time of year again... well actually it isn't - but as you might remember from my earlier threads I divide the year in two halfs and viola - here's the brand new summer version... although it's currently only very early spring

Earlier Wonderful Copenhagen versions:

Summer 2005 - Winter 2005 - Summer 2006 - Winter 2006

This year the pictures will be presented in 900x500 - this format should fit better to average screen sizes in Northern Europe and show a little more detail than the old 800x600 res - while still keeping the same reasonable file size.

We start off in the center of Copenhagen - the City Hall Tower - on a wonderful sunny March 27

Me and DLL hadn't been on a photospree in a long time, so when the weather turned this great we just had to go crazy with the cams...
Despite being in the end of March it was hot as heck - we even found the time to sit on the dock and have an icecream - aint global warming great!

You can expect quite a few pics from yesterday, but let's focus on getting an overview to begin with - and no better place to do that than the City Hall Tower!

The tower itself is 106m tall, but the viewing platform is only located around 80m up.. but it's still high enough to get a great 360* view of my beloved city!

We start of with the City Hall Square...

Then we take a look north..

And west..

And south west...

And here we have Copenhagen Downtown..

Back north again - the church in the middle is the "Church of Our Lady"

And finally we look east over the island of Amager.. notice Sweden in the horizon..

That's it for this time... but rest asure that this was only the humble beginning... there's many pics to come... so join me on this thrill ride of a thread, that will present my Copenhagen from early spring to late fall..

And feel very free to ask or comment should anything have gotten your attention...

Lookin forward to the rest!

Cheers mate!

Wow... the adboards really destroys the beauty of the buildings... The square looks so ugly and overcommercialized. A sad sight.

DLL's thread have one from above...
As long as they behave and move whenever the city needs the place I see no problem with them staying there - but it wouldn't hurt if they cleaned up all the junk outside the tent...

whoa! This looks to become one massive Copenhagen thread.
Are you planning to do such an in-depth presentation over large parts of the city?

I would love to learn more about Copenhagen. Ive only been there once and only stayed for a few hours, so I know very little. Do you have any information about the individual buildings?

In any case, great work! wouldnt at all mind seeing some more.
Only one thing missing from your coverage of the city hall square though, the city hall itself. I know youve probably posted pics of it in previous threads, but its a really great building.

^ it will become as massive as possible - as for building information feel very free to ask and I will do my best...

As for the tower itself, here you go:

And yes I will try to cover the city as extensive as possible... I will focus on the inner city and the inner districs as normal, but try to cover previusly uncovered ( by me ) areas and seldom seen angles..

So stay tuned

good. But wont the metro build a similar kind of structure to house the new station? Of course, the station itself is underground, I know that , but with these kind of central stations they tend to want something on top with shops and stuff. Mind you, they can build all that underground as well if they need it at all. Hopefully, all that will be seen overground is a sign saying metro.
When is the new metro ring scheduled for?

I think it's going to look like most of the other stations are looking overground:

^ That's depends on the person doesn't it.. we have plenty of squares without commercials... the ones we have on the City Hall square helps giving it a cosmopolitan look - especially at night - so while I would prefere more screens and less neon I still quite like it...

As for the "sad" comment I would ask of you to keep that for yourself or your own threads thank you very much!

OK, sorry. I didn't mean to sound THAT negative. The square itself is nice, my "sad" was actually reffering to the commercials at that picture (eventhough it probably looks good at night). Good looking commercials can be a "facelift" (e.g. London, New York, Tokyo) but that commercial just looked ugly.

Otherwise great pictures of Sthlm's twin sister!

While all that neon might not make the buildings look their best, that's not what Rådhuspladsen is about! Like Mr D said, there's plenty of non-neon areas in Copenhagen, having one there IMO does add alot to the city.

21c?!?!? you bastards!

Agree about the neon. It makes the square vibrant and distinguishes it from less populated places in the city. And besides, the buildings around Rådhusplatsen are not that old anyway, even if they are trying to look historical with all the towers. It would be another thing with Gamla Stan in Stockholm for instance.

It seems like most of the buildings on the southwestern side are modern in any case, so abit of neon can only do them good.
If there is one thing I would like to see go, however, then thats the aftenshowet building, if you can call it a building, since it obscures the view to the classical building on the northwestern side.

I assume most of those seen from the square are of late 19th-century date?
Also, there seems to have been abit of an Italian theme going on, what with the design of the city hall, inspired by city hall in Siena?, and the tower to furthest to the north seems to suggests venice to me. Palace Hotel tower, although the building itself is more northern in some sense, I would say the mosaics of the tower again suggests Italy.
Only problem is that the towers all seem to be towards the northern and southern sides, thats why you definitely should build the tivoli tower. A modern and sleek addition that adds equilibrium to the square, a perfect way for the modern to complement the classical.
