NOTTINGHAM | Retail In The Great City of Nottingham

I'm starting this thread because we talk about the things going off in Nottingham retail in all sorts of threads. Notts is a great city, frequently ranked 4th or 5th in the retail rankings, we look set to rise in the near future. We have some great retail and I definately think we need to talk about all the development going off.

Aside from Trinity Square, we also have units soon to become available in The Pod, and LMSQ. There also loads of refurbishment's going off in the city. We definately need a permenant place to talk about them.

I'm going to start this of with some things i've learnt on my travels...

1. USC refurb is coming along. They have some gold stuff their putting in the windows
2. Clumber street repaving has started
3. KFC has had a lovely refurb. Much better than it was. All they need to do now is tear down the bridge above
4. The timberland shop has closed down? I don't think its actually closed down tho.. i walked by the other day and they had a sign up saying closed until further noticed...i went back the next day and they had this timberland plastic on the windows so you can't see in the store. i'm guessing its just a refurb.

In the last year we've also had some great other things going off that probably never got a mention...the Lacoste store, the new limeys, G star and the other stuff on Victoria street. Nottinghams got some great things going off...

Oh yeah.. don't forget HSBC's new building.

I dont think you appreciate just how much retail development is taking place in other cities, many of them much smaller cities than leeds. Its also quite shocking that leeds retail has remained stagnant for a whopping 10 years - whilst other cities have been expandin year on year.

Do you honestly think it is wrong and idiotic to suggest 10 years is a long time, when other cities have attracted more development, even tho they have less demand? Surely that must suggest that perhaps Leeds city council should have been more pro-active?

Take Nottingham as an example. It has already just pushed ahead of us in the retail rankings in 2006. Yes, in 20011 we will have the eastgate quarter. But Nottngham will also have built the extensions to the broadmarsh centre of which the extension will be larger than the eastgatequarter. So not only will it maintain its lead, it will also increase the gap. So yes, we are moving forward, but so are other cities (faster) - and this 10 years of complete stagnation for leeds has been very detrimental.

I don't think anyone can really argue that Nottingham can compete with anywhere in the UK bar London.

I read in the post that Vivianne Westwood was considering space in Nottingham? Any more on that - such an iconic store would be amazing for the kudos of the city.

One thing I can't understand, why are the units at No.1 Fletcher Gate and Bridlesmith Walk remaining unoccupied....? Nottingham is a good shopping city, but if it truly were a real destination surely these units would have been snapped up?!

I'm not sure... I guess they are a little out of sight of the North/South Line of shopping. There many ofther shops on flecher gate really? Savils, Architects, Laing O Rouke, and bars... The pod will bring more attention (retail wise) to that side of town. Hopefully this will restore confidence in the units.

I went past USC today and the copper above the entrance looks really nice. There was also loads and loads of lamp shades hanging down from the ceiling.

You know what... I think they need to throw everyone out of the council house and get in some new tennants...do somethink like what they've did with Victoria Quarters in Leeds.... its the prime location... best looking arcade we have...right in the middle of the North South retail line...right next to briddlesmith and victoria st with all the luxury brands.....

Someone brought it last year, however I'm not sure they have any plans to change anything.

Well.. the new Briddlesmith arcade will get the Vivienne Westwood... as well as Paule, KA, and Julian McDonald (never heard of them!)

Guys... here's what I was saying about The Council House arcade...look how elegant it is! They need to throw out those no names and bring some big luxury brands in there...its the perfect place! I rarely go into there... I think it could be much better used. Infact..the only time I go in there is to cross through.

Wing Yip I believe will be opening in the bottom of the glasshouse complex. I remember FHP saying they had let one of the units next to the Aldi being let to a chinese supermarket chain.

That PIP site is great..i'll definately be checking it fairly often for the latest news! This is a good thread...shows a lot of activity in Nottingham.

Few other bits and bobs..

Former bar Caberet is getting a new look and name..Escutcha, and will be a cafe bar from what I can tell.

Former Burger King on Angel Row is now becoming a second branch of Nandos for the city.

£1.6million Gatecrasher nightclub due to launch in the city in the former Media Nightclub on Queen Street in Sept '07. Will act as a temporary flagship nightclub for the group during reconstruction of the Sheffield club following a serious fire earlier this year.

Toni & Guy opticians have opened on Market Square just between the newsagent and Pizza Hut

Christopher Wray lighting (formerlly on Derby Road) had put in a planning application for signage at The Axis development, though whats going on with this now is anyone's guess.
