mis fotos de Bogotá

No hablo español, lo siento.

I visited Bogota in November for 2 weeks and had a GREAT time. I've considered moving there for 6 months to teach English - someone told me that there is a high demand for English-language teachers. Does anybody know if this is true?

Anyway, here are the photos of my trip to Bogotá - I noticed there weren't a whole lot of Bogotá photo threads so I figured I'd share my pictures. I hope you enjoy!

desde Torre Colpatria:

...carrera septima?

desde Monserrate:

cerca de carrera 7a...

desde Torre Colpatria tambien:

Parque 93?

a cerca de 93?

This food cost less than half what it would in The United States:

"downtown"

avenida jimenez, i think:

la candelaria me encanta!

I had a great time, no problems at all. I stuck out quite a bit in other parts of Colombia, especially Cartagena and Santa Marta, but everyone was nice.

I visited because naturally a lot Americans have some curiosity about Colombia, given its violent past (although that's changing so fast), and especially the urban planning of Bogota. I have met Enrique Penalosa and hope he wins re-election as mayor - his planning and ideas are revolutionary on a worldwide scale. Bogota is a more humanistic city than most of the cities in the United States - the ciclorutas especially are extremely impressive. Be proud!

I have pictures of Cartagena and Santa Marta, but I didn't post them because I really preferred Bogota. Cartagena was okay, but let's just say I was not happy in Santa Marta - we called the airline to have our flights changed so we could leave early.

Cartagena was fine, it was very pretty. I mean, I didn't enjoy it as much as Bogota but it was simple personal preference - it was scorching hot, about 30c, and I really preferred the montane high altitude 18 degrees celsius temperatures of Bogota.

We hired a taxi driver from Cartagena to Santa Marta (which is affordable by world standards.) The drive itself was amazing, but then it started to rain and we were laid over in Baranquilla for what seemed like an extra 2 hours. The taxi place was not anywhere near the pretty parts of Baranquilla, so I can't say I really saw the city in its true light.

The drive from Baranquilla through La Cienaga around towards Santa Marta was one of the prettiest I've been on - the open plains with the mountains in the background was very breath-taking. La Cienaga was kind of interesting, being rather poor, and people actually came up to our taxi wanting to know who we were.

Anyway, Santa Marta itself I did not like at all, I have to be honest. There was some kind of coastal tide flooding when we were there so we couldn't swim, and there was a layer of water filled with basura that made the downtown area seem like a swamp.

There were no reasonable hotels, either, they were all cheap, but very run down and unattractive. As far as dining, it was not at all varied like Cartagena or Bogota, we basically had the plato corriente (is that what it's called?)

Now I like the beef, plantains and rice plates sometimes, but that was all the restaurants seemed to offer at all, except for the piko piko that had just opened. The mall was kind of sad, it was brand new and very shiny, but it didn't have any shoppers except for us and a few other people. I think they over-anticipated the middle-class buying power of the area, the prices at Carrefour seemed to be out of range of most Santamartenas.

We were also followed and harassed a lot by locals... unlike in Bogota where European folks blend in, in Santa Marta we stuck out like a sore thumb. (Although I should say that I am British, but my friend I went on the trip with is actually Mexican, just very white.) People wouldn't accept no a few times, I had to learn how to say "hay dice que no!"

Anyway, Santa Marta wasn't terrible, it was just kind of boring and sad.

OK, thanks for your answer. I understand you about Cartagena, is not your kind of city. Santa Marta surprises me , I must say I have not been there, but it looks really nice on pictures and with good hotels... but hey, I still want to go, Maybe you went during a bad time for the city.
I hope you come back and visit some other cities like Medellin and Cali.

Oh I definitely plan on it! We wanted to go to medellin but didn't have the time.

Interestingly enough, a lot of American Colombians were the ones warning us against going at all. They all left Colombia in the 80's when things were really bad and haven't been back, so they don't know how much it has improved!
