Marriott to grow in Scandinavia

http://www.aftenposten.no/english/bu...cle2224707.ece

Seems like they will probably build several new hotels in Scandinavia in the coming years... wonder where they will choose to build in Stockholm!

I do hope the designs are better than the Oslo Airport one shown there though. :P I was never too fond either of the Marriott in Copenhagen, but the hotel itself (for guests) is fantastic. :P

I hear many new "big" hotel chains comming up here recently, we're getting more attractive i guess. Hopefully they will build some nice hotels, by far better than the one on that rendering of Oslo Airport hotel.

The renders dont look good. Hopefully it will be better in real life

Here are four of the hotels to be constructed in Norway:

Mariott Oslo Airport Gardermoen

Kristiansund Airport

Trysil skiresort

Hemsedal skiresort

And it seems this is the one in Kungsholmen Stockholm

Thanks! I actually like the Trysil one, and the next one might not be so bad depending on how they do it. The Stockholm one isn't bad either... is that the only one they're planning in Stockholm, do you know?

This news fits well with todays story of the shortage in hotel-beds in Oslo. Aftenposten Aften reported that when comparing growth in stayings in Oslo vs. rest of Norway, Oslo should have at least 125 000 more than the have now. While there were virtualy no growth in hotel-stayings in Oslo from 2006 to 2007, surrounding regions in Akershus experienced growth on up to 10 percent, but are now also closing up to their full capasity around the high-seasons.

They have already started on that project in Stockholm, in november last year, although it's mostly digging at the moment I suppose, havn't been there to have a look.
The whole project is supposed to be ready in november 2009.

So maybe the Stockholm one will be opened before the Malmö one then?

Isn't there even a single Hilton in Norway?

The Malmö one from the picture in the article seems like they're just slapping their name on a current (and quite nice) building, no? So I presume it opens somewhat soon?

Nah, that building will need complete refurbishment. It currently holds a food court (typ Hötorgshallen) and I can only imagine that it's pretty 'greasy' behind the scenes, so to speak. Marriott will remodel the building completely on the inside, and I think they won't be able to move in until 2009.

Ah, ok. It'll definitely be a nice, cosy hotel though, I bet. Nice addition to the city.

Does anyone know if there's any other cities that's topical for a new Marriott?

I posted this in the Malmö Projects thread, but I might as well post it here.

For those of you who don't read Swedish; a large exhibition centre is planned in the northern Malmö suburb Burlöv, and connected to this project will be a 700 room (!) Marriott hotel. This is on top of Malmö's current hotel expansion from 3000 to 4000 rooms in the next couple of years, includnig another Marriott Renaissance 5 star hotel on Lilla Torg in downtown.

Marriott och Malmömässan vill öppna i Burlöv
2008-02-21 foto: Erik Skogh

i Malmö city.

Overview rendering from a previous article in SkD;

The background of all this is that Malmö's current exhibition halls which also has a large congress centre will move out of Västra Hamnen in the next years to make room for more residential and commecial developments. A new combined concert hall and congress centre will be built downtown close to Malmö C, and a exhibition halls were planned to be built in Hyllie. Although, it looks like Burlöv will be the site instead.

Very small picture of the hotel but it seems like it could be nice. 700 rooms though? Wow... that would beat Stockholm. Is there really enough of a demand in Malmö to warrant such a huge hotel?
