Kind of trees you would like to see in Miami.
Right know the biggest project in the Miami Dade area is to plant more shade? trees. I really don't know what is a shade tree. Is it a tree that offers a good shadow?
Well, I got mad after reading some of your commentS. " Miami is not green enough", "the city needs more trees" etc... were some of thE many posts I found extremely morronic, However, now I realize that the trees you were talking about were not the kind of trees I was thinking, you know, the palmettos and palm trees. Now I notice that we actually need more trees planted on the streets, SPECIALLY IN areas such as Kendall, Cutle ridge, Liberty city, Opa Locka, Little Havana, Westchester, Flamigami (especially this one), Allapatah, and you get the idea. Someone in here, I don't recall who, wrote that palm trees were not going to be part of the project. Now I'm happy for the city. Now, since I don't know what a shade tree is, I want to ask you the following, What kind of tree would you like to see more in Miami? 1) The one you find in Coral Gables: ![]() 2) The one you find in southwestern nieighborhoods: ![]() 3) The one you find in Miami's Tropical Park. They look like pINE trees: 4)The ones that turn yellow. (You find some of them in the south, but lately they haven't turned at all.) ![]() 5) Other. Post the name of the tree and some pictures. I'm thinking more Poinciana and Gumbo Limbo trees. They grow locally and are noninvasive species. I love the Banyans/Ficus trees (especially in Coral Gables) and think they're a wonderful example of how shade trees can positively affect a community, but after seeing how well they faired the most recent Hurricanes I don't think they'd be so great to have around... they can get very expensive to maintain and often become very top heavy.
I'm pretty sure the ones you posted on picture 3 of Tropical Park are Australian Pines (Casuarina) trees. These are exactly the kind of trees we don't want in South Florida. They are very invasive and their pine needles actually contain a chemical that kills all other trees around them. While they grow exceptionally well in our climate, they are certain to collapse during any tropical system that swings through. Personally, I'd like to see a lot more oak trees. Up here in Boca, I've noticed some of the oaks they've planted here that are beginning to mature. I remember how small they were when they planted them 15 years ago, and now they're actually great shade trees to walk (or drive) under. Live oaks grow really well, despite the fact that they take forever to mature. They're also great cause they're pretty low maintenance during a bad storm. To sum it up, I'd like to see: Royal Poincianas, Gumbo Limbos, Oaks, and some Banyans. An orange tree here or there would be nice to walk by too.

I love Live Oaks, especially draped in spanish moss. But they need to be planted far from streets, sidewalks, and underground utilities because when those little Oaks get big they get a big root system also.

Yeah, they occupy a big space. but it would be excellent to see a row full of them on major "treeless" streets such as Bird Road, Flaguer, 8 streets, Kendall Drive, Eureka, Sunset, US1, Okeechobe and so forth.
What kind of three is being planted by the city, right now? Are the citizens able to vote for the kind of tree they want to see around their area? |

Can't argue with this one. Spot on. To add on others I'd like to see more of: Natives: Mahogany, pond apple, long leaf pines and mangroves and cypress (where appropriate) I'd also add the occasional Kapok, Baobab, Sausage and other tropical flowering and fruiting trees. They really add that touch of exoticness to Miami that drives all the tourist crazy. |

I may not know everything about Miami but I seen photo and some studies, but I did been to Florida twice before. Anyways, as much I love nature and landscape. I think Miami has to much Palm trees, which I do like palms tree but I guest that what make less dense of shade in the air?
They should blend allot of different tropical trees making it look very natural and wild looking. “Indian Laurel,” is infrequent in Miami. Need allot these bad boys. LOL Maybe some Baryon but there pretty common in Miami. Baoboo look like a really cool looking tree and would be great, but is also infrequent. So it be nice to have allot of these tree. “False Tamarial” are nice looking. Is also common and native to the area. Love this tree, “Gumbo Limbo!” Pretty perfect for shading, is also native and common. Would love to see these densely around the area more. Silk oak is nice, but is common. Weeping Fig tree is a really cool tree. Maybe some other different tropical fig trees because they give off pretty good shade. I also think it be interesting to blend allot of tropical bamboo and giant bamboos! Pines tree are not my favorites and Spanish moss dose make it look creepy, nasty dead looking. Yuck! |

The Poincianas are really beautiful when they're all blooming at once.

Calm down, I didn't know those were Puerto Ricans. I simply don't like it, it looks like an Anaconda with arms.

All the different kinds of palm trees til it hurts,ya just can't have enough palm trees in my opinion. I love the Royal and Coconut palms the best because they are the only trees of this variety in the lower 48 states and they are beautiful.
