Kolkata (CCU) | Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport

Please post all updates w.r.t. the Kolkata airport makeover in this thread.

__

IU's edit:

Project Information:
Kolkata's airport is currently being upgraded in light of the booming air traffic in the Indian aviation. The modernization and expansion of the NSCB airport will be done by May 2011 and this will include the construction of a new terminal, extension of the second runway, taxiways amongst others.

Designed by RMJM, the new terminal will be able to handle 20 million passengers/annum which would be sufficient till 2015. Work has started on it and the terminal should open by May 2011.

The new terminal building will have an area of around 180,000 sq metres. 104 check-in counters, 44 immigration counters, 25 security gates, five conveyor belts and 15 aerobridges will be the other features of the airport post development.

Deep piling work for the integrated passenger terminal had begun in Nov 2008

The consultants for the modernization of this airport is a consortium of Indian firms partnering with Hong Kong’s RMJM and a Paris-based firm ADPI.

Work on nine domestic bays, three cargo bays and 11 additional parking bays has already started

Inside the new terminal:

2000 cr modernization plan for Kolkata airport

Hindu

Quote:
New Delhi (PTI): The Airports Authority of India will upgrade the Kolkata and Chennai airports at a total cost of Rs 3,800 crore, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010-11.

"AAI would spend Rs 2,000 crore to modernise the Kolkata airport and Rs 1,800 crore for the Chennai airport. The modernisation process has to be completed by 2010-11," AAI Chairman K Ramalingam said here on Thursday.

At the Kolkata airport, a new runway would be constructed along the existing one. For Chennai airport, the existing cross runway would be operationalised and an additional runway would be built, Ramalingam said.

"The in-principle approval for the modernisation plans of the two airports has been given," he said, adding that the projects would be carried out solely by AAI.

AAI would also commission a new runway at the Delhi airport by September this year.

"A third runway would be commissioned by September along the two existing ones at the Delhi airport," he said.

Speaking at the inauguration of 'Aerodrome India 2008', Ramalingam said there was a need to build aviation infrastructure at faster rate to manage the traffic and build capacity at various airports and the projects are a part of that process.

He also said that efforts are being made to enhance non-traffic revenue to upgrade airport infrastructure.

Where do those five walkways from the terminal go? Just to the green area?

The airport itself looks awesome, ATC tower is futuristic and landscaping is pleasing.
but i don't like the way they designed the access roads. it will be a big blunder and stupidity if they go with this design.
i don't like the way the two roads merge at 90 degrees. it is absolutely ridiculous and will only create traffic problems. it defeats the purpose of having multilayer access design. they will most prolly need traffic light at the junction which will slow the traffic down. and it is rush hour then traffic might line up to the entrance even. if they don't have lights but have stop signs instead then it will be even worse. Desi public don't like stop and go... we are all go and stop for none..

either they need to built a bridge, or US interstate style merge and exit lane , or a circle as they did at HIAL..

As an architect, in my personal opinion, this will be the best "designed" Airport in India when it is constructed with Kochi coming in 2nd place

two simple questions:

Can all this be made with Rs. 200 Crores (USD 500 Million)?

Has this plan been finalized?

The plan is final as much as I know, now all they need to do is get on with the job and they need to do it NOW to prevent escalations and meet the 2010-11 deadline. There was already some news of delay due to some logistics issues.

Let us be optimistic that AAI would do a great job here and in Chennai

AAI will be shelling out Rs.2000 Crores and not Rs.200 Cr

right, thats an obvious typo!

Ramkan, and you forget the 'contributions' to the party of the people.

but more seriously, I still think Rs. 2000 seems little for a project of this scale.

KolkataUSA, can you tell me where you got the picture in your #4 post. Looks like some architectural consultants website, and i'm really curious to know which one.

Kronik might be right. The rest of 1800 Crores can go into self rewarding AAI and other govt. babus. Some people might disagree and call it "Corruption". :-)

The Telegraph

Quote:

Calcutta airport aims to be ready for the Airbus A380 by the end of next year though no airline in India will have the flying behemoth in its fleet until at least 2011.

The runway at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport will be widened and lengthened, along with the addition of a taxiway, to make room for the world’s largest commercial aircraft. “We hope to complete the work in a year from the day of commencement. If we can finish the work in time, it is going to be a big achievement,” airport director V.K. Monga said on Friday.

Apart from New Delhi airport, where the A380 made its first landing in India on May 6 last year, Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and the new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad in Hyderabad are ready to greet the A380.

“The width of the taxiway shoulder is the most important factor in handling the A380. We have drawn up our blueprint for expansion,” Monga said.

The plan to extend the secondary runway by 400 metres on the southern side, towards Narayanpur, was finalised earlier this week. The runway is already being extended by 440 metres on the opposite side, avoiding the mosque that stands there.

The Kaikhali road will have to be diverted because of the southern extension. “The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will lease out more than 25,000 square metres of land to the state government for the diversion,” an official said.

The AAI will spend Rs 2 crore and the state government will provide Rs 3 crore.

The length of the runway is 2,400 metres and the addition of 840 metres will be enough to handle large, wide-bodied aircraft like the A380.

As many as 12 new parking bays are under construction along with two additional security-hold enclosures on the ground floor of the domestic terminal.

The manager of Singapore Airlines’ operations in the east, Vinod Kannan, said Calcutta was a “very important market” and that an A380 could fly out of the city sooner than most expected. “We will definitely consider the option to operate an A380 aircraft from here.”

Singapore Airlines now flies Calcutta to Singapore four times a week. The airline was the first to introduce an A380 flight — between Singapore and Sydney — in October last year. The flight to Delhi earlier was part of a promotional tour organised by Airbus.

The minimum width of the taxiway should be 23 metres for an A380. The shoulder width on either side must be around 30 metres each because of the aircraft’s mammoth wingspan.

“Taxiway shoulders must be constructed to reduce the chances of damage caused to (or by) the outboard engines, which overhang more than 25 metres from the centre of the aircraft,” the official said.

The taxiway and runway must be capable of supporting the A380’s weight, too. A turning pad will be built on the edge of the northern extension to enable the aircraft to use the full length of the runway for take-off.

The only Indian airline that has ordered an A380 so far is Kingfisher Airlines. It will have a fleet of five jets, the first of which is to be delivered in 2011
