77 Charles West (Charles St W and St Thomas) | U/C | 16 st | 61 m | Bloor-Yorkville

Hoarding is going up so demolition of the private French School "Lycée Français de Toronto" should begin soon.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
The Lycée Français de Toronto is a French school of modest size located in Toronto, Ontario. Founded in 1995, it had 350 students in the 2007–08 school year. Currently located at 77 Charles Street West in downtown Toronto. It will be relocating as of September 2008 to new school buildings at 2327 Dufferin Street. The Lycée Français de Toronto nevertheless offers the full range of grades in the French educational system, from pre-school to the Baccalaureate, alongside teaching on Canadian history, geography and economy.

Personally, I love the conservative design restraints in this modernist infill It manages to maintain lovely street presence with the old facade and setbacks on the tower yet the glass is so beautiful in its simplicity. Way to kill some hodgepodge in an excellent location!

Too bad a very decent Mid-Century building was destroyed for this dated, 80s-wannabe garbage.

I'm not too sad to see the brown brick school gone as I found it a bit factory-like, but I am more disappointed about the Edwardian houses and that handsome apartment building kitty corner that were demolished for the other project.... and now that lot stands empty with a nice weed collection starting.

I believe you need about $2 million for a unit.

I'd say around 2005.

I like utilitarian the way you like Edwardian and Victorian. If you don't mourn my losses, I won't mourn yours.
