GDP of Nigerian States
I found some interesting info on wikipedia on the size of the economy of nigerian states.
if a few were nations they wouldn't be that bad, by african standards anyway. its also clear from the info that the north holds down nigeria's GDP big time ABIA GDP (PPP) - Total - Per capita 2007 estimate $8.69 billion[1] $3,003[1] Adamawa Population - 2005 (estimate) - 1991 Census Ranked 21 of 36 3,737,223 2,124,049 GDP (PPP) - Total - Per capita 2007 $4.58 billion[1] $1,417[1] Akwa Ibom GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $11.18 billion[1] $2,779[1] Anambra Population - 2006 Census¹ - 2005 (estimate) - 1991 Census - Density (2006) Ranked 10 of 36 4,182,032 7,821,858 N/A 863/km² GDP (PPP) - Total - Per capita 2007 $6.76 billion[1] $1,585[1] Bauchi GDP (PPP) - Total - Per capita 2007 $4.71 billion[1] $983[1] Bayelsa GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $4.34 billion[1] $2,484[1] Benue Population 1991 Census 2005 estimate Ranked 7th 2,780,398 5,181,642 GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $6.86 billion[1] $1,592[1] Borno-- Population 1991 Census 2005 estimate Ranked 12th 2,596,589 4,588,668 GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $5.18 billion[1] $1,214[1] Cross River State GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $9.29 billion[1] $3,150[1] Delta Population 1991 Census 2005 estimate Ranked 9th 2,570,181 4,710,214 GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $16.75 billion[1] $3,990[1] Ebonyi Population 1991 Census 2005 estimate Ranked N/A N/A 4,339,136 GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $2.73 billion[1] $1,232[1] Edo GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $11.89 billion[1] $3,623[1] Ekiti Population 1991 Census 2005 estimate Ranked 29th N/A 2,737,186 GDP (PPP) -Total -Per Capita 2007 (estimate) $2.85 billion[1] $1,169[1] Gombe Population 2006 est. Rivers State's GDP is just below that of Lagos yet it must all be centered around Oil and Gas Industry, there is little commerce/development to show for such an economy.
Concerning the economy of Northern Nigerian States, yeah there has been a lot of neglect, but after reading some recent articles by a Northern Kaduna, I am anticipating that the Economy there is about to be revived. And there are also some states there making some real progress. I can't remember which states in particular. but if memory serves me right Niger and Yobe are the ones.

When I said that I wasn't referring to where the revenue came from, but where it was invested in.
Lagos is not centered around the Oil and Gas Industry it never has been, I am not referring to Revenue, but Developments and Infrastructure etc. Even in it's state, it does serve as a functioning business Metropolis, which should be the same for Port Harcourt.

I'm just saying Port Harcourt doesn't have the infrastructure for such an economy.

9,013,534 is lagos's population.
i didnt have time to post every state but you can find the info on wikipedia. we still have a long way to go. the numbers look good when compared to other africa nations but for cross river to have a gdp of 10 billion when singapore with the same population has one of 100$ shows the work left to be done |

Just to put things into perspective, Uruguay with 3 million people has a GDP (PPP) of 37 billion. But I like these figures of individual states/provinces because it gives a better representation/regional disparities (all countries have them).
Btw does anyone have figures for Abuja? I know considering their not part of a specific state, I expect they'd probably be one of if not the wealthiest of areas in the country. |

for some reason there is no gdp data on Abuja. my guess is it wont be the highest in GDp but will be the highest in per capita income
I'd really like to see similar things for South Africa. Last edited by owo9ja; September 3rd, 2008 at 01:37 AM. |

No doubt you could say that, but there is evidence of investments into Infrastructure nonetheless. In some cities throughout Africa this is none existent. Yes there is poor maintenance but the actually existing infrastructure is in most cases adequate or was at some point.
Which is my argument. Is Port Harcourt simply a Location for resource exploitation. I know it is a controversial remark, but I think it is the truth.

this list shows that the federal governmetn needs to kick the north in the pants and get them to catch up. nigeria's per capita income should be double what it is if th enorth did their part |
