Tribeca Film Festival Doha
Qatar Museums Authority and Tribeca Film Festival launch 'Tribeca Film Festival Doha' in November 2009
Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), has announced a groundbreaking agreement with New York's world-renowned Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), to launch a world-class international film festival, Tribeca Film Festival Doha. ![]() HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and US actor Robert De Niro signing an agreement to launch a Doha international film festival The first festival will take place November 10 - 14, 2009 and be presented at Doha's celebrated new Museum of Islamic Art and in cinemas across Doha. The announcement of the cultural partnership was made at a special ceremony at the new Museum of Islamic Art, which was attended by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority Board of Trustees, and Abdullah Al Najjar, Chief Executive Officer of the Qatar Museums Authority. Joining on behalf of the Tribeca Film Festival were the co-founders, Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. H.E. Sheikha Mayassa expressed her confidence that the Tribeca Film Festival Doha will bring together people from around the globe and help to build international awareness and understanding of Arab culture and the Arab world. 'I invite film enthusiasts from every country to share their passion for this art by visiting the Tribeca Film Festival Doha,' Her Excellency stated. 'In today's increasingly globalized world, creative initiatives like this Festival can play a truly inspirational role by bringing cultures closer together.' Tribeca Film Festival Doha will be modeled after the annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, which is going into its eighth year. Like the New York event, it will welcome the community, diverse audiences and the global filmmaking industry. As a result of an extensive collaboration between TFF and QMA, the Festival has been designed to showcase the local Qatari community, as well as the broader Arab culture. Tribeca Film Festival Doha will feature new work from established filmmakers, alongside film debuts from newly discovered directing talents. The program will include approximately 40 films, as well as special events. The Festival will launch 'The Doha Conversations', thought-provoking and insightful dialogues between icons of world culture set in intimate environments, with the goal of fostering discussion in Qatar and around the globe. Full details of the festival program and guests will be announced at a later date. 'The Tribeca Film Festival Doha is destined to become a major annual event in world cinema,' stated Abdullah Al Najjar. 'The Festival will include a wide range of programming, from outdoor screenings to movies for children, from documentaries to new Hollywood releases and from independent films to showcases of the very best works by Arab filmmakers.' 'We are honored to create an enduring cultural partnership with QMA and to announce the launch of the Tribeca Film Festival Doha next November. Qatar's transformational vision for the 21st century with its emphasis on culture and education is uniquely consistent with the goals and aspirations of the Tribeca Film Festival,' said TFF co-founder, Jane Rosenthal. 'We hope that film will not only be used as a form of entertainment at Tribeca Film Festival Doha but play a role in bridging cultures closer together. By learning each other's stories, we can see how much we share in common as well as explore and better understand our differences,' said Robert De Niro. 'In addition to the positive cultural implications, this initiative underscores the enormous potential of the entertainment market in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the region to the future of the film industry,' said TFF co-founder Craig Hatkoff. 'We think the key to success will be understanding and respecting one another's cultures and traditions. We believe this Festival will lead to many other important and educational initiatives in Doha and beyond.' 'The Tribeca Film Festival has become a world-renowned event, and its new partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority will leverage that success and help further its mission of introducing films and filmmakers to a global audience,' said New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. 'The Festival's substantial cultural and economic impact in New York City is unequivocal, and our hope is that Doha will reap similar benefits. The expansion of a New York institution like the Tribeca Film Festival to Doha is a sign of the international significance of New York City cinema and will help foster new relationships between our two cities.' Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in response to the events of September 11. The festival's initial purpose was to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of Lower Manhattan through an annual celebration of film, music and culture. |

Good news, but how much did they pay, that can be the only motivation behind such a bold move as there is little or no community for filmmakers here.
Cash oriented publicity, whilst good for the population, it kinda brings a little bit of a mockery to such events. What next? The Oscars? The Grand National? The Superbowl? It seems that they are able to buy in events, but not actually spawn them!? What say you?

Even Oman has its own film festival which is organized in cooperation with a famous french movie festival (Nantes)....

Tribeca enterprises co-founder and film legend Robert de Niro arrived at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) last night, attending the red carpet screening of his film, Stone. The arrival of the icon was one of the most eagerly-anticipated events of this year’s programme, and last night fans gathered to catch a glimpse of one of the most famous actors of all time. De Niro, who also features in another film this year, Machete, was one of the people who created the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and has expressed his pleasure at the event’s collaboration with Doha. He will also sit on the jury for today’s screening of one-minute films alongside Doha Film Institute’s head of education, Scandar Copti, Mira Nair and Najwa Najjar. Yesterday’s programme also featured red carpet screenings of Man Without A Cellphone, Miral, and Certified Copy, with a selection of stars attending the events. Throughout the day, industry professionals also participated in a number of panel discussions addressing a variety of issues. Comedian and director of Just Like Us, Ahmed Ahmed led a panel on the power of humour to cross borders and boundaries, discussing how comedy can unite people from different cultures by celebrating similarities and differences through the “universal language of laughter.” Two other Doha Talks took place yesterday afternoon; one on the subject of emerging actors and stars which focused on the upcoming feature by Jean-Jacques Annaud which is set to be shot in Qatar, whilst the second addressed issues of production, distribution and marketing and how they have changed in the current global, digital market. Thousands of people are expected to attend Katara today to enjoy the activities that Doha Film Institute (DFI) have organised to celebrate Family Day. Today will also see the screening of two of Adel Iman’s films, 1993’s Al-Irhab Wal Kabab (Terrorism and Barbeque) and 2008’s Hassan Wa Morcus (Hassan and Morcus), as part of the celebration of his ‘lifetime achievement’ award at DTFF. ‘I Am Film’ show The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has launched “I Am Film,” an exhibition of photographs by renowned French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, as part of Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2010. “I Am Film” is on display throughout Doha, visible on the streets with portraits adorning buildings and squares all the way to Katara, Cultural Village, the main hub of DTFF 2010. The final stop of the exhibition will be a fully interactive installation complete with Lacombe’s photographs as well as video portraits by her sister, film-maker Marian Lacombe, highlighting their journey around the world to over 100 Arab cinematic figures.

![]() This year’s Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) has seen a flurry of film stars arrive in Qatar this week, and Wednesday evening saw the arrival of one of the most well-known figures from Hollywood and the world of theatre. Kevin Spacey spoke to fans and journalists as he walked the red carpet before the screening of his film, Casino Jack. He also answered questions from the audience after the screening, explaining that the story of lobbyist Jack Abramoff was based entirely on truth, saying: “It may be hard for you to believe, but we did not make up a single thing.” The film presents the story of Abramoff with a degree of moral ambiguity, and although the protagonist admits his wrongdoing, Spacey said that he believed Abramoff had been “thrown under the bus” to create an illusion of Washington cleaning up its act. However, the star was keen to highlight the hypocrisy involved in the case, with senators – including head of the Indian Affairs Committee, John McCain – taking money to protect the interests of Native American tribes in the same way that Ambramoff did. “It’s not as black-and-white as it’s portrayed – he was part of a culture that was happening and is still happening,” he said, adding: “Hopefully what the movie will do is humanise him.” Judging by the response at last night’s screening, through his performance Spacey certainly achieves his aim. The star said that he has found his experience of Doha “very cool” and enjoyed taking a class of emerging actors from the wider region through a workshop earlier yesterday. Actor, director, producer and artistic director of the Old Vic, Spacey also expressed his support for the initiatives launched by Doha Film Institute over the past year. “I think that what Doha is doing in this festival is really embracing Arabic films,” he said, adding: “I think that is fantastic because if you’re a young writer or want to be a young writer, director or actor, where do you begin in regions like this where it’s not necessarily part of your family tradition?” “I think things like this suddenly put it on the map, and make the idea of going into the creative industries a reality,” he noted. Spacey expressed his dedication to supporting emerging talents, claiming that it is important that well-known actors attend festivals such as DTFF. Spacey spoke about his earliest memories of acting, recalling his first acting class and the applause he received after a short performance – something he has pursued ever since. This desire to perform has led Spacey through an illustrious career to his current placement at the Old Vic. He said that he is scheduling a world tour of the Sam Mendes-directed play Richard III, which he will bring to the region – although he could not confirm whether that will include Doha. Aside from the theatre tour, Spacey is passionate about “repaying” people in the industry following his success. “I don’t just want to go to each city and say ‘oh – look at me, I’m doing a play’, I want to go and create a sense of excitement about theatre, particularly in places where theatre isn’t quite on the map as it is in London or New York,” he explained. And he urged young people and aspiring filmmakers in Qatar to be active in their creative efforts, rather than sitting and waiting for someone to pick them out.
