Strangest and most distant license plates you've seen in your area

Here in Duluth, MN and elsewhere in the region - I've seen
  • Alaska - every once in a while I see an Alaskan plate around town
  • Northwest Territories - I once saw ther polar bear shaped plate
  • Germany - I've seen two or three German plates in the U.S., one on a tour bus in South Dakota (I have no idea why a German tour company operating in the U.S. has - or even is allowed to have - a Bavarian plate).
  • Mexico - I think I've seen a Mexican plate once.

The European posters should have more interesting responses, since theoretically you can drive from Vietnam or Laos to France or the Netherlands.

I think the most distant one I've seen around here is from WA. There are also some interesting varieties that can be seen from time to time; for instance, I've seen a few "Federal Interstate" plates on large trucks on some major highways.

I saw a French license place once, and a Guam license plate another time.

A lot of people have German license plates on their front, and their "real" one at their back, because only the back one legally counts.

I once saw a car with a Californian license plate just south of here

On the A2 near Breukelen I once saw four rally cars with Chinese plates.

For European plates: Belarus, Greece, Turkey, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria are quite far, but I bet that Chris has seen more

Here in Hungary I have seen two trucks from Iran, 3 days ago a car from Kazachstan (KZ). But at the university where I study (Budapest), I often see strange ones, belonging to African students. So I saw several from Nigeria and Ghana, and a few I can't recognise (no oval on the plate or the car). One was like the old Polish plate, white letters on black background, just different font. Also there I saw a car with a Mongolian plate (MNG was the oval). US and Canadian plates are common here, not even surprising to see one.

I don't understand why US and Canadian plates would be common in Hungary???

Surely no Hungarian would go to the trouble of buying a car in the US, registering it there and then shipping it over at large expense to Budapest?? Some people here in the UK privately import US cars but not many and in any case they register them once they get here, not before they leave America.

and I can't see many Americans driving up to Western Alaska, waiting for winter until the Bering strait freezes over and then driving across Siberia to Hungary for a vacation.
