Newcastle upon Tyne, Scotland?

Okay, first off, I couldn't find a Scottish sub-forum, so this was the best place to put this, in my opinion.

It came up a couple of years ago, and was chucked out and handed over to the English parliment and forgot about as far as I know.

Please read this, and tell me you're thoughts.

If not going as far as that, how would you feel for the border to be lowed to the Tyne or such, with or with out Scotland becoming indipendant.
I know Berwick is wanting to have a chance to move sides again, how about if you went further, say about 50 miles to Newcastle?

I dunno, that sounds quite extreme, and something that surely most geordies would be against? I think the border is fine where it is, though I wouldn't mind if it moved a few miles south to the Tweed, giving us the nice part of Berwick upon Tweed and leaving the slightly grotty half to England

is there any special historical connection between Scotland and Newcastle?

I personally get a better sense of connection to Scotland then England, we have our own tartan, wee have bag pipers, for some reason many of our buildings in the city have the flag of St Andrews rather then the St Georges cross.
I think both us and Scotland can relate to being ignored alot of the times for places further south, I even hate it when Manchester and Liverpool call themselves Northern, when in my opinion it's fairly central, it takes away the look towards Newcastle and Scotland.

But then again, it may just be the grass is greener on the other side things, trouble is, I'll never know.

The Kingdom of Northumberland encompassed areas of Scotland such as Edinburgh. Its a lovely notion, but Geordies are clearly English, with a hint of Scots

When does Liverpool ever call itself 'Northern'?

Fair enough, how others refer to these places as Northern then.

There are also some dialect similarities. It would interesting to see some form of opinion poll on the matter.

To many in London anything north of Birmingham is "The North" and they also include Liverpool in this category, which always confused me when coming from Glasgow.

Have met a few from the Newcastle area that feel they would be better off in Scotland than England. I would welcome them with open arms to Scotland the more the better, would give us another National Park too!

I'd certainly take back 'South Berwick', but only if the inhabitants wanted it; the recent referendum suggests quite a majority in favour. I doubt the same would apply in Newcastle though, perhaps an opinion poll is required?!?!?

Great! this is something ive spoke about before, i have family in gateshead.
I think it would be ideal to bring newcastle into scotland they are practically scots anyway and they get treated like shite fae the london brigade who lump us all the same anyway.
Being from newcastle bigchris what is the feelings down there about it would they go for it as i know a few geordies who are proud Englishmen

Ermm, myself personally I would love it, and know of others that would too.
As for others, it's really a marmite situation, you would either love it or hate it, lots of Scots come to Newcastle, and many families have Scottish routes. At the moment I would say it would be around 60-40 in favour of staying in England, but I'm sure if the Scots made an arguement good enough then they could swing it.

The only real way we would ever find out though is by a poll like this, I don't ever think that it would happen, atleast not for about 20 years.

Also, I tried to imply that the border would the Tyne, and Northumberland borders, which would mean that you're family in Gateshead would still be in England.

Thing is in terms of closeness to the administrative centre it makes sense. Newcastle would suddenly go from being about 300 miles away from the capital to just under 120. I'm not answering the emotional attachment argument but merely the administrative one. If Edinburgh was more inclined to help develop the North East then London is then it could be a very good move. Especially as Scotland seems an awful lot keener on dualing the Northumbrian stretch of the A1 then London is. Also if Scotland pushes ahead with a high speed link from Glasgow to Edinburgh then they'd be in a position of full control to extend it down to Newcastle and create a three city economic zone.

Salif, you are spot on, I personally believe that Newcastle would be better off administrated by Scotland, mainly transport would benifit.

But I do know that NCC members (top members) are constantly at Hollyrood, I never know why, although they are working very closly with Scotland about HSR, but something gets me, what if they are succesfull in this and other areas, like the A1, will they say, Hi you know how we work so well together, you want to join forces.

And why is the Scottish flag flown at variouse places in Newcastle, instead of the cross of St George?

Are we secretly Scottish, am I paronoid?, and which fucking 3 people (so far) said no?, find out in my next rant on SSC.
