Awassa (ሀዋሳ) | Southern Region (ደቡብ) | Ethiopia | City Gallery

Awasa (also spelled Awassa or Hawassa) is a city in Ethiopia, on the shores of Lake Awasa in the Great Rift Valley. Located in the Sidama Zone 270 km south of Addis Ababa via Debre Zeit, 130 km east of Sodo, 75 km north of Dilla and 1125 km north of Nairobi , as of 2006 Awasa is the capital of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region. The city lies on the Trans-African Highway 4 Cairo-Cape Town, with a latitude and longitude of 7°3′N 38°28′ECoordinates: 7°3′N 38°28′E and an elevation of 1708 meter( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awasa).

Awassa is my hometown and I have heard rumors of it growing very fast these days. I would love to see some recent pics of it. I will try my best to post pics that I find on the internet but if you happen to be in awassa or visit it, please share the pics.

Thank you

Welcome to the forum Hawassa!

I LOVE that city! I've stayed at the last hotel posted (last 2 pictures). There are only a few rooms but they are very very well-maintained, and very reasonably priced as well.

So many things I love about this city: very clean, very friendly people, very relaxing pace, NO beggars at all. Last time I was there, it was the 3rd or 4th anniversary of my grandma's death, so per tradition, my mother wanted to give some alms to beggars. Well, let me tell you, we drove around town for over half an hour before we finally found one. Yes, ONE. And we weren't even sure he was a beggar so we had to ask him.
It's also pretty liberal. Women were riding motorbikes (or whatever they're called) in high heeled boots and shorts lol.
They have also built a sort of pathway on the edge of the lake.
I'll try to find pics of this city I love.

I love the Hotel too. Small hotels are better than the big ones. Easy to maintain, easy to run as well.

The "peninsula" is a beautiful park, and there's a fish market right on the shore.
The local fishermen fry the fish as soon as it's fished and sell it right inside that park. The fish was really delicious.

Rickshaws (they call them bajaj in Ethiopia) were introduced around 2 years ago.

Scenery right to the south of the city. My idea of heaven!

A poster in the city: it reads in Amharic "Liyunetachin wubetachin new. Wubetachin andinetachin new." It means "our diversity is our beauty, our beauty is our strength." The different ethnic groups pictured are those who live in the SNNP state, of which Awassa is the capital.

My friend just came from Hawasa about 3 weeks ago. He grew up there in the 80s and 90s. He loves the scenery of the city and surrounding natural beauty. He said they have some buildings but not much development. He was disappointed by the lack of improvement in living standards and is now a revolutionary.

Thanks for the higher quality version of that poster, abesha. That bird in the middle was driving me wild from the small version in Hawassa's post (I was trying to figure out what it was).

Btw, I'd have said "our unity" instead of "our strength" (andinetachin), strictly more correct, but "our strength" is maybe better idiomatically.

A cool relaxing Ethiopian town!

Btw, roads in Awassa seem well-developed, why don't you post them in African Highways thread ?

Cool Amharic signs!
