Subi Lords to reopen tomorrow
3rd July 2009, 10:30 WST

More than 1000 people are expected to mark the reopening of Lords Sports Club in Subiaco tomorrow, three months after Subiaco City Council decided to save the popular facility and run it as a community gymnasium.

The upgraded club will have a specialised fitness studio with 60 group classes each week, a 25-metre heated swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts and sports competitions — all indoors.

Its official opening comes more than six months after the club shut amid claims by the former operator, the Kerry Stokes-owned Foxington Pty Ltd, of skyrocketing rents under a lease agreement with the council, which owns the building.

The council had been in long-running negotiations with Foxington Pty Ltd to buy the plant and equipment, naming rights and a release from legal action.

But the deal was no certainty on it continuing to operate Lords as a gym and sports centre, which was dependent on a new business plan and feedback from community consultation.
The club was previously used by 15,000 people each week.

The new club will have a fully equipped gym, specialised fitness studio with 60 group fitness classes each week, 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool, indoor tennis courts, squash courts as well as indoor sports competitions.

Subiaco Lord mayor Heather Henderson said yesterday there had been a lot of work involved to get the centre ready for its reopening. More than 90 staff had been employed to run Lords with 20 to 30 umpires set to be employed in coming weeks.

Ms Henderson said the city had received more than 250 membership inquiries in the past week alone with old members also keen to rejoin.

Former top-ranked Australian tennis player Alicia Molik, who recently moved to Perth from Melbourne to be with her boyfriend, was at the club this week 30/6 for a hit out with her coach Rob Kilderry.

Molik, a former world no. 8 who retired from professional tennis last year after a run of bad injuries, said the courts were fantastic and she would be there a lot more.

completely different documents. Local Governments will usually require an ODP for infill developents or DA's contrary to zoning that exists in an area where there isn't a well considered balance of land uses.

Another one of interest is this one which outlines a development plan for the former Castle Garden's site in Halls Head.

Mostly R-IC and R-80 zoning. Yum. Although, given the thread, is Mandurah suburban now?

We can hope so at a later date. It is pretty ugly though with the bus and train depots.

COVENTRY SQUARE MARKETS Morley

Western Australia’s proposed premier markets "Coventry Square Markets" is scheduled for completion in March 2010.

Prominently situated in arguably the best retail location in Morley, this new market is positioned approx. 100m from the bustling Centro Galleria Shopping Centre and is directly opposite the Morley Markets.

As a veritable mix of restaurants, cafes, speciality shops and markets, it will be a focal point for both local and overseas tourists.

The café strip at the front of the markets is where all the eateries will be located. This area will be the focus for all the restaurants, cafes, bistros and a microbrewery.

Highly trafficked with excellent exposure Walter Road West and easy access from all directions.

Well here you go:

Major development near train station
16/07/2009 4:00:00 AM
A 15 HECTARE area of bush land adjacent to the Mandurah train station has been earmarked to become a major State Government land development.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said LandCorp, in conjunction with the City of Mandurah, was looking to develop apartment- style living next to the major public transport link.

“Our vision is for the development to provide sustainable and affordable living options for Mandurah, not just through different housing types including townhouses and apartments, but also through access to services and facilities,” Mr Grylls said.

“By increasing housing next to the railway station, this will help reduce dependency on motor vehicles, encouraging people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

“The development could also include well-designed parks and recreational areas, with the possibility that some commercial or retail business opportunities may also be included, providing future employment potential for those who like the idea of living near their place of work.”

The site has been named Mandurah Junction due to its proximity to the Southern Suburbs Railway and Fremantle Road.

Mr Grylls said that in exploring the potential for the site, LandCorp had discussions with key government agencies, local community groups and residents to determine a future vision to serve the needs of the city.

According to the Western Australian Planning Commission’s Population Projection figures, by 2021 the population of Mandurah is expected to reach 100,000 which is an increase of 35,000 on current figures.

Mr Grylls said the development would seek to provide a benchmark for sustainable housing in Mandurah in terms of design, material selection, water, power and waste management.

“The government is in the early planning phases for this development and, given the importance of this site, we want broad community feedback on these and other issues to help LandCorp create an appropriate vision for the site,” Mr Grylls said.

Anyone who wishes to provide feedback can participate in a survey conducted by LandCorp. The survey, which closes on July 31, 2009, can be completed by visiting http://www.landcorp.com.au/mandurahjunction or by phoning the Mandurah Junction information line on 1300 762 623 to obtain a hard copy version.

It is understood it would be at least three years before any development started on the site.
