I am confused Momo, I was not under the impression that the Shibuya area needed renovation? I thought that it was the premier shopping district in Japan already, what are they attempting to change?
The tower itself is nice though; it reminds me of other Japanese building designs such as towers built in Shinjuku.

The station needs a renovation to cope with increasing traffic and also to make it more practical for commuters. This is also the main focus of the whole project and it's also a much bigger project then this tower. And this main Shibuya shopping district is more at the other side of the station, the tower is replacing old and small buildings kind of like the ones that are still around the building site. But that doesn't mean that if was part of the shopping district this wouldn't have been done. In Tokyo they easily demolish a good functioning but old building that needs renovation to replace it with something completely new, no matter where it's located. |

The lower part of the tower looks interesting, but I'm not sure about the upper part. Rather bland.

Thanks for making this thread. Do you have any information of the "Shibuya 2-chome 21 Area Development Plan"? Is this part of the plan that will build some high-rises over the Tokyo Toyoko Line terminal and adjacent bus stations when through service with the Fukotoshin Line is established underground and the realignment of JR tracks 3 and 4 adjacent to the tracks 1 and 2 of the Yamanote Line?

The station redevelopment plan is still in the planning fase and the latest modification to the plans was made in January.
As you say the station will get a different platform layout that is much compacter then the current situation. current situation: ![]() ![]() The Tokyo Toyoko Line platforms terminal goes underground with the connection with the Tokyo Metro Fukotoshin Line that will be opened in 2012. The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line terminal that is now located above the Yamanote line platforms is relocated to the East and will have an island platform. All the JR platforms will be next to each other, with 1 island platform for the Yamanote line and 1 for the Saikyo Line & Shonan-Shinjuku Line that is now a long walk away from the main station building. Right now the station doesn't really have it's own station building, all the station facilities are in the tunnel under the tracks and in the Tokyu Department Store that is surrounding the station. The store will be demolished and there will be a new station building all over the tracks from East to West where the station tunnel is right now. I don't see any designs for the station building and also nothing on the height of the building. There are two other locations for new buildings on the other side of the elevated Expressway on both sides of the JR tracks. ![]() ![]() I don't see a time plan for the construction, but the whole project should be finished in 2017. But since the complexity of the project I wouldn't be surprised if it will take a bit longer. The latest plans with more detailed maps can be downloaded in pdf here: http://www.city.shibuya.tokyo.jp/kur...uya_gaiku.html |

I was in Yokohama station the other day and saw these posters:
I was also in Shibuya that day. The picture below was taken from Tower Records, 6F: Some more from in front of the building: |

Really good for Tokyo. The city needs taller, modern towers like this one. Korea and China are already way ahead..

I like it. It's boxy but futuristic at the same time.
