New Riverfront Office Tower Breaks Ground

http://blog.chicagoarchitecture.info...breaks-ground/

Quote:
CHICAGO (CBS) – Something happened in downtown Chicago on Tuesday that has not happened in several years: a groundbreaking for a new office building. Business leaders told CBS 2’s Derrick Blakley it’s a sign the economic climate is improving.

Tuesday morning, crews broke ground on a new 45-story office tower at Lake and Canal streets in the Fulton River District. Groundbreaking for a new building is a familiar ceremony, but the start of construction on a new office tower isn’t something Chicago has seen in at least four years.

The project was first announced last summer. Daniel Fournier – executive vice president of Quebec-based Ivanhoe Cambridge, a co-developer of the skyscraper – said “There’s not a single doubt in my mind that River Point will serve as a beacon for the economic resurgence that is already well underway.”

Ivanhoe Cambridge and Hines Interests LP are building the office tower on the banks of the Chicago River. It will feature 1 million square feet of space.

Below is a summary of the work on River Point which will take place this week (all work will take place during daytime hours).

Week of March 18

- Survey Work – Track monitoring and construction layout will begin on Tuesday 3/19.

- Equipment Delivery – Excavation equipment will be delivered on Wednesday 3/20.

- Crane Delivery – Loader and assist crane delivery is scheduled for Friday 3/22, but may delay depending on weather conditions.

- Barge Delivery – The barge is expected to be delivered between Thursday 3/21 and Tuesday 4/2. Delivery requires three days of acceptable weather conditions. (Note: the barge could be delivered on Saturday or Sunday.) The barge will be anchored at the edge of the river. No work on the river’s edge is expected to take place before the week of April 15, however material will be staged on the barge.

- Drill rig delivery – Scheduled for Tuesday 3/26.

- Caisson work – The earliest date for drilling caissons is Thursday, 3/28. Work will take place from 8AM – 4PM (pending coordination with Amtrak flaggers and track personnel). During this time, caisson drill rigs will be staged on site. Concrete trucks will arrive on site throughout the day, and dirt/spoils will be removed from the site during the day in dump trucks.

We will continue to keep you informed as we receive updates from the developers. More information regarding the River Point project can also be found at their website www.chicagoriverpoint.com.

Thanks and have a great day!

I think this should be taken out of proposal since this project is preparing for construction!

A square peg in a round hole - you can see one of the chocks holding the form inside of the sleeve.

Thanks for the updates, Harry! At what point are projects typically considered "under construction"? Foundations? First steel?

This is the deck and park over the tracks, the tower work starts later (next year ?). On SSP it won't be UC until caissons for the Tower are put in.

The deck columns have an I-Beam in their center - not sure of the reasoning. (Steel for Tension/Concrete for compression)

May 9th

Not sure what to make of this, looks like some sleves (rusty - pulledand re-used) moving out, but the casings (silver - stay in) are new. Staging for another site.

Flying a sleeve from the E side to a truck for removal

A lonely pile - not sure what this will be for.

Most of the pilings wend in here, along with some steel sheeting.

You can see the new casings lined up in the background.
