Thanks for the latest updates, Nanda. Everyone in Kollam is eagerly waiting for the inauguration of the ESI Medical college in November 2013. Hope President or Prime minister will inaugurate the hospital as mentioned by our central minister Kodikunnil Suresh.

Cashew container service from Kochi to Kollam almost certain to start

It is almost certain that the Kochi - Kollam Cashew Container service will be started by the end of this month. The coastal shipping meeting that ended at Kochi has taken some important decision in this regard which may help in reducing the transportation cost as well as road traffic due to trucks.

Steps have been taken to remove the electric posts on the roads leading to Kollam Port to widen the roads for the truck traffic.

KOCHI: A cargo vessel service between Kollam and Kochi is set to commence operation for the first time next month.

Final preparations are on for the launch of this service which would ease traffic congestion on the national highway stretch between Kochi and Kollam used by huge container trucks. This was disclosed by ports minister K Babu on the sidelines of the summit on coastal shipping held in the city on Monday.

He said chief minister Oommen Chandy had convened a meeting of various stakeholders on Thursday to work out a timeline for completing the remaining work in a mission mode. According to officials in the Kerala State Maritime Development Corporation (KSMDC), the cargo, which will be transported through sea, will initially consist of cashew. Imported raw cashew would be sent from Kochi to Kollam in containers and processed cashew would be brought back, said K K Rajendran, the managing director of KSMDC.

"We are also trying to get other cargo also," he said.

He said a vessel had been identified for launching the operation of this service, and it would be taken on lease by the corporation.

The vessel will have a carrying capacity of 154 containers and the trip between two ports would take 48 hours. "We cannot go at higher speeds as it may adversely impact fishing activities," he said.

Meanwhile, Viswapati Trivedi, the chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, said the dredging in the Kottappuram-Kollam stretch of the national waterway would be completed in November. The draft in the waterway will be two meters.

Lets hope we may be able to see some of the following scenes at Kollam also if the sea plane service is realized in the city:

Yes...indeed a great news. Infact, the widsening andf 4-laning of Kottiyam - Kundara road was envisaged as part of the 4-lane road planned from Kottiyam - Kundara - Kundara Techno Park - Karunagapally during the previous LDF government's rule.

It is great that something is happening now. If this road is widened as 4-lane atleast to 21 - 25 metres it can become the real Kollam Bypass as it is atleast 10 to 12 Kms away radially from the core city center connecting all the important towns and the Kollam Techno Park.

The road is envisaged to tap the IT and Tourism potential of the city and the district.

The road starts at Kottiyam junction and passes through Kannanaloor, Perumpuzha, Elampaloor (Kundara) - Kollam Tech Park at Kanjiracode - Padapakkara - Kuthiramunampu - Mundroe Islands - Perungalam Islands and finally touches Karunagapally municipality. The total length of the road is 32 Kms which will bring Karunagapally more closer to Kottiyam. Currently, to reach Karunagapally from Kottiyam, the shortest distance passes through Kollam city and is about 38 - 40 Kms

The road will link the Kollam Techno Park at Kundara and the Tourism potential of Munroe Islands through which it passes. Moreover, the road acts as a future bypass for the city as it passes through the scenic rural area (Comprising backwaters, canals, rivers and cockonut groves) of Kollam except at Kottiyam, Kannanaloor, Kundara and Karunagapally towns. The exisiting bypass passes through Kollam city and the new road will be a relief in future for those who go from Trivandrum to Ernakulam as it is not touching the city.

Yes....I saw the advertisement. It is a great thing in the educational sector of Kollam.

TKM Institute of Management, TKM Institute of Technology, proposed ESI Pharmacy college, and now AOL International Academy. Ezhukone and surrounding region getting a facelift due to these educational institutions.

Kollam-Kottapuram National Waterway III would be operational by November 2013

Mr. Chandy reiterated that the Kollam-Kottapuram National Waterway III would be operational by November, giving a boost to water transport.

“The work on the first reach of the Rs. 2,000-crore Kochi-Kozhikode coastal road has begun and the project will be completed in a time-bound manner.”
