Asmara could use a little TLC but it is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. Just needs a paint job in some spots

Exactly what I was thinking. It's charm is undiminished, but it could really benefit from a nice coat of paint in some places and a scrub in others. But Asmara, to the Asmarinos' credit, is a very clean and generally well kept city. And that's not faint praise- too many cities in Africa with a rich heritage of older or colonial architecture have become dirty and the historic buildings dilapadated, and I've seen it in Addis, and I've seen it in Accra.

I am Ethiopian, and then these images got an urge to know Asmara is a beautiful city with happy people and a happy people, I think this a great idiocy hatred between Ethiopians and Eritreans, what happened happened, Eritrea achieved independence only and got rid of an exploratory Ethiopia, but yet so I think we all Ethiopians and Eritreans we should respect and follow in our lives, after all we are all children of God, and that to live in hatred?? I love the Eritreans and it is no defeito although I am Ethiopian! Peace Peace!

Definitely. So much charm, and history...and prospects for the future! Here is hoping that progress helps settle things down so people can just...live.
Asmara on its own could be a major tourism draw and currency earner for the country.

It is a very nice and clean city, it only needs some painting and a few more skyscrapers would be perfect

No skyscrapers! At least not in downtown, maybe in a newly developed area, otherwise skyscrapers would ruin this old charm.

The only option is to take land from the surrounding villages which is not a smart thing to do politically, or to clean up the slums with new residential and commercial developments. I prefer the second option.

That could work.

Because land is a part of our people's identity. The very name of your village denotes the name of a particular ancestor. People are not quick to forfeit their land due to the historical and familial ties they have to it. It will happen eventually as the country continues to develop, but no sense of accelerating process until there's a proper land policy put in place that works for everyone.
