At last, the foundation stone for the Rs 1,670-cr Phase III of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project (KDWSP) will be laid by chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at Sahebnagar on the city outskirts on June 1.

The Phase-III project aims to bring 90 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to Greater Hyderabad from next year. As against the demand of 440 to 450 MGD, the HMWS&SB is currently managing to supply about 340 MGD to Greater Hyderabad. Presently, Phases I and II of the KDWSP are, together, supplying 180 MGD of water _ 90 MGD each.

The demand for drinking water has increased in the city due to rapid urbanisation in Hyderabad city and merger of surrounding municipalities with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), IT sector, ORR growth corridors, industrial clusters etc.

All the Greater Hyderabad MLAs, irrespective of their political affiliations, have been vociferously demanding for the last three years that the state government should take up the KDWSP Phase-III on a war footing to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad.

HMWS&SB officials told Express that the reliability of existing sources like Osmansagar, Himayatsagar, Singur and Manjira was diminishing with every passing year. This was because the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar were drying up regularly and inflows into Singur and Manjira were dwindling.

The total installed capacity of the existing sources is about 340 MGD. Based on the source dependability analysis, the available net quantity of water is of the order of 271.50 MGD. Hence, there is an immediate need to augment the water supply from KDWSP Phase-III to meet the immediate deficit, according to the officials. Already, the HUDCO has approved the Rs 1,670-cr KDWSP Phase-III.

The foundation stone, which was planned to be laid by the chief minister in November last year, could not be laid till date due to various reasons. The main components of the project are construction of a water treatment plant (WTP) of 90 MGD capacity, construction of clear water reservoirs, balancing reservoirs of 117 ML capacity to facilitate intermediate pumping, construction of pump houses and erection of pumping equipment, laying of clear water transmission mains of 113.5 km length and laying of distribution trunk mains of 62 km length to connect to service reservoirs.

The WTP will be constructed on the existing premises at Kodandapur. The clear water reservoirs and balancing reservoirs will be constructed at the existing places adjacent to the Phase-I and II structures at the respective campuses.

Kiran to kick-start spate of works today

Quote:
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday would be laying a series of foundation stones for different projects, including for a flyover at Tolichowki Junction and for road-widening works from there till Gachibowli.

The other works for which Mr. Reddy is scheduled to lay foundation stones include road-widening from Botanical Gardens to old Mumbai Highway via Masjid Banda village and from Moghal-ka-nala to Puranapul. The tour of the city would culminate with a foundation stone laying for Krishna Phase-III and a public meeting at Saheb Nagar.

The flyover at Toli Chowk Junction being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.45.90 crore would have a length of 650 m with 38 spans and expected to be completed in 18 months, it would come up with service roads of 7.50 metres on either side.

Once in place, the facility would offer a reprieve from traffic congestions and reduce travel time between Mehdipatnam and Gachibowli.

Apart from the flyover, as part of the proposal to develop the road between Tolichowki to Gachibowli as an Expressway, the improvement of Old Mumbai Highway on this stretch would be taken up at a cost of Rs.43.48 crore that include Rs.5 crore for land acquisition and utility shifting.

243 PROPERTIES

A total of 243 properties would be affected for the 7.45 km long road works here.

Estimated to cost Rs.35 crore, the 3.8 km Botanical Garden road would be widened with six lane divided road that includes a two metre cycle track.

For the work on this key link between Hitec City and old Mumbai Highway, forest land for about one km has to be acquired and 164 properties would be affected.

Mr. Reddy would also be laying foundation stone on Saturday for widening of road at Nandanavanam from Moghal-ka-nala to Puranapul.

Of the 3.43 km stretch, costing an estimated Rs.29 crore, the proposal is to build a new formation for a length of 1.6 km with a four-lane divided cement road complete with cycle track and footpath.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Panabaka Lakshmi and Chief Minister, N.Kiran Kumar Reddy would launch the ‘Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG Consumers’ at Indira Priyadarshini Hall, Public Gardens, at 11 a.m. today.

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday said a sum of Rs 11,000 crore would be spent in the next two years to improve drinking water supply in Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister laid the foundation-stone for the Rs 1,670 crore Krishna phase-3 drinking water supply project at Vanasthalipuram here today.

Speaking on the occasion, he said Hyderabad was currently getting 1.6 tmc ft of drinking water every month, which would increase by 1.3 tmc ft once the Krishna phase-3 and Godavari drinking water projects were completed by the middle of next year.

"The Godavari water supply project, taken up at a cost of Rs 3,700 crore, is fast progressing. Both these schemes will bring an additional 15 tmc ft of water to the twin cities per annum," he said.

The Chief Minister also laid the foundation-stone for a road-over-bridge at Tolichowki, to be built at a cost of Rs 46 crore.

He also laid foundation-stone for four other development works worth a total of Rs 109 crore.

Its a political agitation that has been taking place for a separate Statehood for the Region around Hyderabad, although there has been tense moments before the situation right now is pretty calm at the moment and I could say quite safe for the tourists visiting here, as the decision about it has been postponed to after the elections which are set to happen next year.

This might come in handy http://www.hyd.co.in/safety/, http://www.aptourism.in/index.php/contact

The long awaited forest clearance for phase I of the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project has finally come. With this, the major hurdle for construction of the Master Balancing Reservoir (MBR) at Ghanpur near Shamirpet and laying of 12-km-long pipeline through forest land in Karimnagar, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts is cleared.

The eagerly expected clearance was received on Friday with the Bangalore-based Ministry of Environment and Forest regional office giving the green signal. The Water Board urgently requires 50 acres of land for early completion of the project. While 25 acres are needed for construction of 150 mgd capacity MBR at Ghanpur, another 25 acres is necessary for laying pipeline through Karimnagar, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts. The Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangalore, had made a field visit to these areas some time back and promised early clearance. The clearance now received pertain to Package III works.

Compensatory land

Now the Board needs to provide compensatory afforestation land for the 50 acres acquired from the Forest Department. It has identified its own land at Murmur in Karimnagar district for this purpose. The Board is also required to deposit money for tree plantation in the land as part of afforestation. This is being worked out and once this formality is completed the forest land will be handed over to the Board. “The whole thing may take a month’s time,” Board’s MD, J. Syamala Rao, told The Hindu.

Other components of the Rs. 3,375 crore project are progressing briskly. The projects aims at bringing an additional 172 mgd (10 tmcft) water to the GHMC area from Yellampally Barrage in Karimnagar to Ghanpur covering a distance of 186 km. So far the Board has completed 126 km of pipe-laying work. In package I, 43 km pipeline is laid, package II 48 km and package III 35 km.

Other civil works such as intake channels, sump-cum-pump houses, water treatment plants, electro-mechanical equipment, sub-station and HT transmission works are in full swing. Most of the project components, officials hope, will be completed by March 2014.

The Ring Main I and Ring Main II works are also expected to be completed by March 2014. They are essential for distribution of water from the Master Balancing Reservoir at Ghanpur to the existing reservoirs at Lingampally and Sainikpuri.

Pelican crossing for Hyderabad soon

Quote:
Hyderabad: Though the pelican crossing system failed when it was introduced in New Delhi and Bengaluru, it will debut in the city shortly with a pilot project on two locations in Hyderabad.

Pelican crossings are traditionally manually-operated signal system, which allows pedestrians to cross the road. However, the one which is planned in the city will be automated. The manual pelican signals have been installed in New Delhi and Bengaluru, but were not a success.

The pilot project in Hyderabad will be implemented by Bharat Electronics Limited, which is already executing the traffic signals project HTRIMS. For the pilot project, two stretches of a total 13 kilometres have been selected.

One is the Begumpet to Greenlands stretch and the other is the Mehdipatnam to Hitech City road,” said an official from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
The number of pelican signals to be installed will be decided after a feasibility study. Officials say a pelican signal could be installed every 500 metres.

The pelican signals to be used in the city will be automated, unlike those in the other cities. This means pedestrians cannot activate the signal themselves. “We are planning to use cameras that will detect the number of pedestrians (who have gathered at the crossing) and then turn the signal red. It will be a robust system,” the civic official said.
